THE REASONS FOR AND THE EFFECTS OF RURAL-URBAN MIGRATION

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

Man’s mobility has increased as a result of technological and economic advancements. He has specialized modes of transportation to aid his mobility, and distance is expressed in terms of time depending on the mode of transportation.

Migration is a dynamic component of population that refers to people moving from one geographic area to another.

Migration can be divided into the following categories:

a) Rural-to-rural migration

b) Migration from rural to urban areas

c) Migration between cities

d) Migration from cities to rural areas

However, attention will be focused on the rapid urbanization process, which has put significant strain on existing infrastructure.

However, this has resulted in deplorable living conditions, unemployment, and urban congestion.

Infrastructure rationalization has become the order of the day, with unemployment a major issue in Ondo State’s Ese-Odo Local Government Area.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Since independence, there has been a significant movement of people from rural to urban areas.

This project aims to investigate the causes and consequences of rural-urban migration, which has recently become widespread in the study area of Ese-Odo Local Government Area.

Perhaps this movement is the result of a lack of socio-economic amenities in rural areas, the need for white-collar jobs, educational opportunities, and so on. However, finances and time have been major constraints in making this project work.

THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVES

The following are the study’s objectives that will be achieved:

a) To identify the factors that contribute to rural-urban migration in the study area.

b) To draw attention to the effects of rural-urban migration in the area

c) Make recommendations for controlling rural-urban migration in the area.

QUESTION FOR RESEARCH

Because the following research questions will guide this project’s work,

a) What are the causes of rural-urban migration in Ese-odo Local Government Area?

b) What are the local effects of rural-urban migration?

c) What are the potential strategies for reducing rural-urban migration in Ese-odo L.G.A.?

THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

For a long time, the study of migration has been a problem because people have been moving from one location to another in search of favorable opportunities such as good housing, good jobs, education, health, good communication networks, water and power supply.

The study will aid in educating individuals, policymakers, and the government about the importance of developing policies for integrated rural development to combat rural-urban drift in the Ese-odo local government area.

THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The study’s scope will include the causes and consequences of rural-urban migration in Ese-odo Local Government Area, Ondo State.
