INTRODUCTION
THE STUDY’S HISTORY
The principal of a school serves as both the administrator and the teacher of the institution. Edem (1998) characterized the principal as a figure of authority who has the power to shape the actions, attitudes, and beliefs of his staff and students and who demands their receptive cooperation. The principal makes sure that the school is carrying out its duties.
This is why Ozigi (1997) believed that since school projects are his own reflection, the administrator is the center of attention, the school’s reputation depends on him, and he has the power to make or break the institution. The principal is without a doubt in a prominent position within the educational system. The principal’s position necessitates that the occupant have good qualities, such as commitment to duty, vision, honesty, emergetic, mental alertness, understanding, and intelligence, among others.
Many principals in our secondary school system lack these stalling qualities, either because they were poorly trained or because they were appointed as a result of a situational issue that is occasionally referred to as “the Nigerian factor.” This element explains why one school consistently outperforms the other in important academic endeavors. Griffith (2000) stated that school administrators are leaders by virtue of their positions and that the caliber of their leadership determines.
It has been suggested by various mass media that the decline in educational standards is due to principals’ alleged inability to work toward the accomplishment of the objectives of education set forth at the school level. Numerous studies have shown that the principal’s administrative skills and other factors, which the study aims to undo, play a significant role in the implementation of major school policies and programs.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Parents and various Nigerian and international media outlets have frequently voiced their displeasure with the country’s overall and Edo State’s specific gradual decline in educational standards. They blame the unpleasant situation on student and teacher indifference, insensitivity on the part of the government, and incompetence.
Lack of funding, staff, personnel, infrastructure, and parents’ and teachers’ negligence of their duties are just a few of the issues facing schools today. Based on these conjectures, this study aimed to identify the challenges facing secondary school administration in the Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Principals perform administrative and supervisory duties in their schools, which greatly influence their success or failure, and because of these responsibilities, they frequently run into issues. Ezeocha (1992) identified examination fraud, school dropout immorality, and a general decline in educational standards as issues affecting school heads in their administrative leadership positions.
Ineffective leadership coordination and control, structural organizational shortcomings, including an excessive centralization of power, were also mentioned as issues with the Nigerian educational system. When a principal must approach the school board or ministry of education for the majority of school needs, it erodes his initiative and creativity. It also forces the principal to spend less time at his school, which allows for the scaling back of important school activities.
Additionally, principals are not given free rein to manage the finances of the schools. This explains why many secondary school needs are never satisfied.
It has been noted that school leaders rarely issue policy statements, which would enable quick decision-making and other administrative action in the secondary school system.
The principal is responsible for converting educational policies, laws, and regulations into actualities. Unfortunately, the majority of them are incompetent because they obtained their positions through years of experience rather than the necessary formal education.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
Finding out the issues hindering secondary school administration in the Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State is the goal of this project.
NECESSITY OF THE STUDY
The information provided by this study will help the government, through its appropriate agencies, in formulating policies and programs that will help to improve the circumstances that present challenges for school principals in carrying out their administrative duties. The government, school administrators, principals, parents, students, and the general public will all greatly benefit from the study’s findings.
The findings of this work will be used by school administrators, especially new ones, to increase their awareness of potential problem areas in secondary school administration.
Parents will be made aware of their roles in assisting secondary school administrators to overcome any difficulties they may encounter in the course of carrying out their duties as principals through the findings of this study, which serve as both preventive and corrective measures to the intending and practicing school principals for the full realization of the objective of secondary education.
The data presented in this work will act as a foundation for future research as well as a source of information for students and researchers.
The results of this study will serve as a wake-up call to the general public and to all stakeholders in the education sector, encouraging them to contribute their skills to building a solid foundation for secondary education that is centered on quality instruction, knowing full well that this is the only way to guarantee a bright future for our children.
STUDY QUESTIONS
To direct the study, the following research questions were created:
1. How does poor school staffing affect the management of secondary schools in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State?
2. How do insufficient funds affect Esan North East Local Government Area secondary school administration?
3. How does the Esan North East Local Government Area’s inadequate physical facilities/equipment?
4. How does the administration of secondary schools in Esan North East Local Government Area deal with issues with school-community relations?
5. How do student conduct issues affect Esan North East Local Government Area secondary school administration?
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main goal of this study is to identify the issues hindering secondary school administration in Edo State’s Esan North East Local Government Area. It was determined how the principals are challenged in managing secondary schools by looking at all the major administrative areas of the school, including personnel, finances, physical facilities and equipment, community relations, and discipline.
TERM DEFINITIONS
Administered: This can be defined as the actions taken to organize, plan, and manage the operations of a school or other institution.
Managing and organizing an institution’s affairs is the responsibility of an administrator.
Militate: This word means to prevent something from happening or existing, i.e., to make it difficult for something to do so.
Secondary school: This referred to a facility where students between the ages of 11 and 16 or 18 attended classes.
Principal: The person in charge of a college is known as the principal. He is regarded as the institution’s leader.
