THE EFFECT OF UNTRAINED TEACHERS ON STUDENT ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOL
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
This study investigated the factors that influence the academic performance of students in some selected secondary schools in Oredo local government area, Edo state, Nigeria. Though many people would agree that there is an observable failure in educational standards in Nigeria’s Edo state.
Nobody could have predicted that secondary schools in Edo state had degenerated to an abysmally low level, according to a Nigeria education observer study, which found that secondary schools in Edo state had degenerated over the last 15 to 16 years.
The shocking news was retorted as one of the lead bead lines in the Guardian, one of Nigeria’s major daily newspapers, on February 11th, 2006. “The federal ministry of education has scored Edo state secondary level the lowest in social studies,” the screaming headline reads. According to a federal ministry of education-sponsored study, secondary teachers in Edo state are poorly trained and unproductive subjects, according to the Guardian newspaper.
According to the report, students in Edo state perform poorly in two areas: poor mastery of untrained teachers and a lack of required technical skill. According to the report, deficiencies in both vital areas render secondary students in Edo state of the last fifteen years unfit.
The study also found a significant disconnect between untrained teachers and parents. Despite the fact that the study may have identified major areas of the influence of untrained teachers on students’ academic performance.
