PROBLEMS IN EDUCATING PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED CHILDREN IN NIGERIA
ABSTRACT
This study’s objective is to investigate the challenges of educating physically challenged pupils in Nigeria. (A case study of College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin). This work consists of five chapters. According to the initiative, the first chapter covers the introduction and provides definitions of terms.
It also addresses the issue of research and significance. The second chapter is devoted to a review of relevant literature. The third chapter describes the methodology and administration of questionnaires that were collected, and it was determined that physically handicapped students can perform as well as their typically developing peers.
The fourth chapter includes data presentation and discussion. Findings are presented in chapter five, and it was determined that physical disability has no effect on the academic performance of students. In addition, it was discovered that learning is not hindered in any way by physical disabilities. Therefore, pertinent recommendations were made to mitigate this trend in institutions.
FIRST PART
INTRODUCTION
CONTEXT OF THE STUDY
Children with disabilities, such as the deaf, the blind, the dumb, and the lame, are endowed and capable of receiving an education despite their disabilities. Consequently, the handicapped children in Nigeria possess the same abilities and sum of knowledge as their school-aged peers.
Education is a necessity for all individuals, including those with physical disabilities. The team can be viewed from numerous perspectives, primarily psychological and maladjusted.
A handicapped child is a child who lacks something that prevents him or her from living normally, such as hands, legs, eyes, ears, etc. in daily life; the term handicap is commonly used to refer to a physical defect, limb, paralysis, partial or complete blindness, etc.
All of these characteristics render the infant incapable of living as normally endowed individuals do.
When used in a broad sense, the term handicapped includes intellectual disabilities and disadvantages that impede learning. In light of the preceding discussion, this study will investigate the numerous school-related learning obstacles that the handicapped child is likely to encounter.
Previous research has shown that societal norms are used to evaluate conduct; as a result, a handicapped student’s teacher may underestimate his or her abilities because they are already deemed incapable of performing as well as their naturally endowed peers.
This study will examine the various educational challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEMS
There are numerous types of handicapping conditions among students, with physical handicap being one of them. It is acknowledged that handicapping circumstances could impede academic progress worldwide. This poses numerous challenges for educators, parents, and educational stakeholders.
Numerous emotional, psychological, physical, and psychomotor issues interfere with students’ education. The central focus of this investigation is the cumulative effect of this problem. Experience has shown that education is a delicate matter, so this is necessary.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the numerous obstacles that may impede the education of physically challenged pupils at College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin.
SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH
The purpose of this research is to investigate the problem of educating physically challenged students at the College of Education in Ekiadolor-Benin. Students at College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin are the primary focus and objective of this study due to the fact that they are older.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
To determine which handicapped conditions are conducive to learning.
To evaluate the effects of physical impairments on the careers of students with physical impairments.
To dispel the widespread notion that disabled students cannot substantially contribute to society.
To investigate the issues faced by handicapped pupils at College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
The conclusion of this study is that physically handicapped pupils require additional support in order to be successful.
The instructors’ responsibilities towards handicapped students must also be significantly enhanced in comparison to those of typical students.
Before they can learn effectively, they require special attention from their teachers, and it is anticipated that there are no special issues that could prevent handicapped students from learning. This study will be of tremendous value to all learning centers, but especially to the students and faculty of College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The research has generated the following classification-related problem questions for this study.
Does having a disability affect the academic performance of students?
What specific issues prevent students with disabilities from functioning effectively in learning?
Is it possible for handicapped students to participate in learning activities alongside typical students?
Does a student with a disability require special attention from the teacher or lecturer?
LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
During the course of data collection, the researcher encountered problems related to a lack of materials and information; however, the researcher employed every useful strategy in the quest for and collection of information and other useful materials for this research. Therefore, by removing all potential barriers, limitations, and deficiencies, this research is strengthened.
