THE EFFECT OF POOR MOTIVATION OF TEACHERS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS
ABSTRACT
This work was inspired by the desire to improve academic performance in public senior secondary school students, with a focus on teacher motivation. The goal of this project is to determine the impact of teachers’ low motivation on student academic performance. The descriptive survey was administered to Public and Private Senior Secondary School teachers and Public and Private Senior Secondary School students in five (5) randomly selected Public and Private Secondary Schools in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The findings revealed that when teachers are unmotivated, their productivity suffers, lowering students’ academic performance. It was recommended that the government at all levels prioritize the payment of teachers’ salaries and other fringe benefits and ensure that they are paid on time;
that the government ensure that basic facilities for effective teaching and learning are adequately provided; and that teachers improve their teaching skills to increase academic productivity among students. Seminars and workshops for both teachers and students should be held to increase academic productivity.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Every organization, whether public or private, has goals and objectives that they strive to achieve. For any goal or objective to be realized, there must be motivational mechanisms in place to increase productivity and achieve the desired outcome. The negative effect on teacher morale, in addition to a lack of job security, and multiple factors diminishing teacher motivation, including low salaries, lack of administration support, salary increases, awarding of awards, granting loans to staff, frequent training of staff to educative workshops, and staff consultative forum, to name a few.
Teachers have been shown to be the primary variable influencing student performance (Kane, Rockoff & Staiger, 2006). The No Child Left Behind Act of 2008 (NCLB) held states and local school districts accountable for any actions that resulted in poor academic performance.
The level of teacher engagement has a significant impact not only on professional development and instructional quality, but also on students’ academic achievement. Students produce and achieve positive results when teachers perform and carry out their specific job roles and duties (Tucker etal; 2005).
Low teacher morale and motivation have become major issues, affecting senior secondary school students’ performance, particularly in Kaduna South Local Government.
1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
Our students’ academic performance is deteriorating on a daily basis. This is evident in the large number of students who fail the WAEC, NECO, and JAMB examinations. Also prevalent are exam malpractices at all levels, as well as the production of secondary school graduates who are unable to speak or write simple correct English. These issues can be traced back to poor teacher motivation, which has resulted in poor student performance, as evidenced by frequent absenteeism from class, truancy, and a lack of enthusiasm for class activities and critical thinking.
“When college students are not motivated, a common outcome is a lost desire to attend class, followed by frequent absence and plummeting grades,” says Dr. Ernest W. Brewer, a professor. The importance of employee motivation in increasing productivity cannot be overstated.
However, it is clear that questions of motivation in the Nigerian context are more easily expressed than actually done. Protests, demonstrations, and strikes have been the order of the day as a result of the government’s failure to incorporate the ethics of motivation into their operating procedures.
Recently, there was a strike in most of the federation’s states due to inadequate remuneration of teachers on the proposed minimum wage. This research work is obvious in order to propose ways of improving the academic performance of senior secondary school students in
Kaduna South Local Government by improving teacher motivation through an improved salary structure, prompt payment of teachers’ salaries, in-service programs for teachers, a conducive teaching environment, and the provision of all teaching materials required by teachers.
1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT
The urgent need to improve the performance of Senior Secondary School Students in Kaduna South Local Government by removing all impediments to effective teacher motivation in order to achieve the objectives of the National Policy on Education, as teacher motivation is seriously affecting efficient teaching of senior secondary school students in Kaduna state Local Government. As a result, the purpose of this research is to provide answers to the following questions:
1. What factors are responsible for proper teacher motivation?
2. How can impediments to proper teacher motivation be removed?
3. What impact will proper teacher motivation have on students’ academic performance?
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
This study is specifically aimed at:
a. Investigating the factors that contribute to low teacher motivation in senior secondary schools in Kaduna South Local Government.
b. Investigating the impact of low motivation on teacher productivity.
c. Investigating the impact of teachers’ low motivation on students’ academic performance.
d. To draw attention to the consequences of failing to maintain a motivational policy in Kaduna South Local Government Area senior secondary schools.
e. Finally, propose solutions for stabilizing the motivational policy of senior secondary school teachers in Kaduna South Local Government.
1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH
The research, in carrying out this research work, poses the following questions to guide the investigation:-
i. What role does motivation play in increasing teacher productivity in senior secondary schools in Kaduna South Local Government?
ii. What are the consequences of teachers’ lack of motivation on students’ academic performance?
iii. What are the factors that ensure motivation stability in teachers in Kaduna South Local Government senior secondary schools?
1.5 THE HYPOTHESES’ STATEMENT
To reach a scientific conclusion, certain assumptions must be made, which will be subjected to research to determine the statement’s acceptability or rejection. As a result, the research assumes:
i. There is no significant relationship between senior secondary school teachers’ motivation and productivity in Kaduna South Local Government.
ii. There is no significant relationship between student academic performance improvement and teacher motivation.
iii. There is no significant relationship between teachers’ motivational stability in senior secondary schools in Kaduna South Local Government and appropriate motivational factors.
1.6 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE
It is hoped that this research will be able to identify the effects of proper teacher motivation on students’ academic performance, as well as suggest ways teachers can be motivated and how teachers can motivate students in the classroom to improve their academic performance.
It is also intended to provide information to parents, families, and the government about their roles in motivating teachers and improving students’ academic performance. It also demonstrates that motivating students by motivating staff will help to solve some of education’s problems, particularly massive failure and exam malpractices, and thus help achieve educational goals and objectives.
1.7 COMPLETION OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of low teacher motivation on the academic performance of students in public senior secondary schools in Kaduna South Local Government Area.
The study includes five (5) randomly chosen senior secondary schools in Kaduna South Local Government Area, the state capital, which has many public and private senior secondary schools. The majority of respondents in these schools were students and teaching staff. The following senior secondary schools were chosen at random for the study:
I am a student at Kakuri Government Secondary School.
ii. Barnawa Government Girls’ Secondary School
iii. Nassarawa Government Secondary School
Sabo, Christ Ambassadors’ College
Danbo International School Barnawa

a. Motivation: This refers to a process that is initiated by physiological or psychological need and results in a specific behavior, as well as drives and incentives.
b. Roles: In the context of research, it refers to the significant impact that something has on an activity or organization.
c. Improving: This is the act of improving the high quality of services.
d. Services: The act of providing something that the general public requires.
e. Organization: A formal structure comprised of various functional departments or units with the goal of achieving positive goals and objectives.
f. Management: The process of planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and coordinating human, material, and financial resources in order to achieve organizational goals.
g. Resources: Anything that can be used to aid in the completion of a task, particularly work.
