Abstract
In this day and age of information and communication technology, social media platforms such as blogs, YouTube, Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, BBM, and 2go, among others, have revolutionized and redefined the monopoly of news and information held by mass media (radio, television, newspaper, and magazine industries), as they have increased citizen participation in news gathering and dissemination.
The study looked into the impact of new media on information acquisition by undergraduates at Lead City University. In recent years, new media has transformed citizens into not only information consumers but also information distributors, a phenomenon known as “citizen journalism.”
The majority of citizens have their own blog, group, or room on social media sites where they publish news stories and gather more information. Others get their information from video sites like YouTube. The survey research method was used, and a questionnaire was created as a research tool to elicit data from the chosen respondents. According to the responses gathered, the majority of students have access to new media or social media.
Students spent more time on WhatsApp, BBM, and Facebook than on any other social media platform. As a result, Lead City University students have a high level of new media usage. The majority of new or social media users spend 6-10 hours per day on their devices.
To make online messages more accurate and credible, the government should ensure that owners of websites and blogs within the country follow defamation, obscenity, and invasion of privacy laws. This can be accomplished by establishing a body whose sole responsibility is to monitor the manifest content of internet materials.
