AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE CONSEQUENCE OF DRUG AND RELATED SUBSTANCE ABUSE ON THE STUDY HABIT OF STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

The study looked into the impact of drug and substance abuse on the study habits of Biology students at the Federal College of Education in Abeokuta. The biology students at the Department of Biology, School of Science, Federal College of Education Abeokuta, Ogun State, are the study’s subjects.

A total of ninety copies of the questionnaire were distributed to the three levels of biology students, with data analysis based on simple percentage and frequency.

According to the findings, the consequences of drug and related substance abuse are as follows:

Curiosity about new things, peer pressure, a lack of parental supervision, and personality issues caused by socioeconomic circumstances are all factors to consider.

According to the findings, drugs increase their sexual desire, help to console them during times of difficulty, and some of them are used to calm down sick people.

As a result, the government should educate the general public about the dangers of drug abuse, while parents should devote more time to monitoring their children’s activities both at home and at school.

In order to prevent drug abuse, stronger guidance and counseling should be implemented.

Teaching drug abuse as a subject, improving communication between administration and students by encouraging a free environment, and tightening school rules and regulations to avoid loopholes.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

The issue of adolescent drug and related substance abuse is a global health issue that has been identified by many organizations such as WHO, RED CROSS, and others. It is a global issue, including Nigeria. Herbs, leaves, and plants have been used to heal and control diseases since ancient times.

The use of drugs in and of itself poses no risk, because drugs when used correctly have been a boon. According to Falco (1988), as cited by Sambo (2008), “chronic substance use can cause serious, sometimes irreversible damage to adolescents’ physical and psychological development.” Depending on the mode of use, drug use can be beneficial or harmful.

A drug is a substance that, through its chemical action, can cause a change in biological functions (Okoye, 2001). It is also thought to be a substance that alters perceptions, cognition, mood, behavior, and general bodily functions (Balogun, 2006). They could thus be regarded as chemical modifiers of living tissues capable of causing physiological and behavioral changes (Nnachi, 2001).

Drug abuse is a major public health issue throughout the world (UNODC) (2005). Adolescent drug use and abuse has become one of the most disturbing health-related phenomena in Nigeria and other parts of the world (NDLEAR; 1997). Several school-aged adolescents participate in mental health programs, either temporarily or on a long-term basis. Some go insane, become ill-adjusted to school life, and eventually drop out.

In medical terms, a drug is any substance other than food that, when used, affects the physiological and or psychological state of the body. When a drug is used for its beneficial purpose, it is called a medicine; however, the term drug should be reserved for substances of abuse and addiction, such as alcohol, cocaine, heroine, cigarettes, and so on.

The Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement (especially) school boys and girls and youths between the ages of 15-30 years constitute the high risk group, with females becoming more involved than they used to, Ibaf (1985) in his classification of psychiatric patients on admission revealed that 82.6 percent are between the ages of 11 and 35 years.

So, drug abuse occurs when drugs are used in a way that deviates from medical prescriptions or socially acceptable patterns within society, and the immediate or long-term effects are harmful to the person. According to medical records, some people drank too much alcohol and died in a car accident.

Some people have taken Kolanut or coffee in excess, causing damage to their Central Nervous System (CNS); many herbalists have caused irreparable harm to their patients by administering herbal substances in excess of acceptable doses.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

The effects of drug and related substance abuse on adolescent students begin at the time of admission to higher education or secondary school. Many of these issues are also caused by different homes or a lack of parental care from either mother or father. His broken home causes a slew of issues for their children or children.

The researcher is currently attempting to identify the various factors that lead to adolescent students abusing drugs and related substances, particularly in schools. Finally, the problem of this study is to investigate the effects of drug and related substance abuse on students’ study habits at the Biology Department of the Federal College of Education in Abeokuta.

1.3 THE OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to determine the extent of drug and substance abuse among students of the Biology Department of the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, with reference to the effect of drug and substance abuse on adolescent students.

Finally, among students, suggest some possible solutions or recommendations to the problems and their consequences.

1.4 THE QUESTION OF RESEARCH

1) What motivates students to use drugs and substances?

2) Do students use drugs or other illegal substances while studying or reading?

3) What are the consequences of drug and substance abuse?

4) How heavily do the students use drugs?

5) Can drugs and related substances have an impact on a student’s study habits?

6) How can we address the issue of drug and substance abuse among adolescent students?

7) What are the effects of drug and other substance abuse on students’ study habits?

8) What factors do students believe are to blame for drug abuse in school?

1.5 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE

In the following ways, the study is important to adolescent students:

i. To learn about the impact of drug and related substance abuse on students’ study habits.

ii. To warn students about the use of drugs and related substances that are not medically supervised or prescribed by doctors.

iii. To learn about the possible reasons why students engage in drug abuse.

1.6 RESTRICTIONS ON THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study was limited to Biology students at the Biology Department of the Federal College of Education in Abeokuta, which consists of 100L, 200L, and 300L classes.
