EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF SAFETY MEASURES ON JOB PERFORMANCE OF WORKERS

CHAPITRE ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of the Study

Workplace safety refers to the working environment of a company and includes all factors that affect employee safety and health. This includes environmental hazards, unsafe working conditions or processes, drug and alcohol addiction, and workplace violence.

Peterson, D. (1998) A substantial surge in accident expenses in the United States of America in the early 1900s as a result of compensation laws and stricter employer responsibility inspired modern concern about workplace safety and a long-term decline in workplace accidents and injuries.

Railroads, mining, manufacturing, and other significant corporations in the United States became increasingly worried about safety. Companies started to secure their machines and power sources, while machinery makers started to construct safer designs. Managers started looking for hidden risks at work and required staff to wear hard hats and safety glasses.

They also formed safety divisions managed by engineers and safety committees comprised of both employees and management. The National Safety Council was founded in 1913 by companies in the United States to collect data.

Scientific assistance was offered by government agencies such as the Bureau of Mines and the National Bureau of Standards, and one university researched company and industry safety issues. Cooper, M.D., 2000

Poor performance and low productivity can be attributed in part to a lack of attention paid to employee safety concerns in many organisations. Employees may be hesitant to work hard if their fundamental needs and the other amenities that they may demand to motivate them are not met.

Many employees in a range of organisations have either boycotted work or gone on strike a number of times due to poor working conditions. Management would have to cease operations and fly to a court of law for hearings on issues such as employee safety, health, and welfare, which would have cost a large amount of money.

Reducing workplace accidents and ill health is an important societal aim because of the pain and suffering caused to individuals and their families. There is also a substantial economic aspect to consider.

The amount of workplace injuries resulted in a variety of economic costs. Direct costs for the state’s health care and social security programmes exist.

Employers must shoulder the costs of insurance, squandered time, missed output, and lost orders. Workplace injuries and illnesses are expected to cost the economy significantly. The death or injury of a key employee in a small or medium-sized corporation could have serious ramifications for the company and its other employees.

Taking extra precautions to reduce occupational injuries and illnesses makes financial and business sense. According to corporations, the percentage raises requested by workers are usually so substantial that failing to reach an agreement results in strike action.

As a result, it is evident that the majority of the conversation about working conditions has centred on salary and income increases. However, when designed and implemented appropriately, safety measures can contribute to greater harmony in the employer-employee relationship, resulting in better job satisfaction and performance.

The organization’s outstanding use of health, safety, and welfare facilities can motivate employees. However, safety precautions are being used in this study to examine if they can increase employee performance at Adwumapa Buyers Limited. Everyone has the right to work in conditions that are acceptable to them,

according to Article 15 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, which deals with Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. As a result, businesses must provide healthy and safe working environments. Employers would be expected to develop and maintain a risk-free workplace and work system. T. Lee (1998). As a result, employers are required to:

Assist in the establishment and upkeep of a safe and healthy workplace and work system.
Ascertain the safety of objects and substances in use, handling, storage, and transportation, as well as the absence of any health hazards.

Provide the necessary information, instructions, training, and supervision to ensure the health and safety of those other workers participating in the specific work, as far as is practically practicable, taking into account the worker’s age, reading level, and other factors.

Prevent workplace pollution and protect workers from potentially dangerous gases, toxic chemicals, vapours, dust, fume mists, and other substances or materials.

Provide and maintain sufficient safety appliances, appropriate fire-fighting equipment, and personal protective equipment at no expense to the worker, as well as instruct the worker on how to use the appliances or equipment.

Provide separate, sufficient, and appropriate restroom and washing facilities for male and female personnel, as well as garment storage, changing, drying, and contamination cleaning facilities.Make certain that there is plenty of clean drinking water at work.
Adwumapa Enterprise Limited is a private Ghanaian firm. Cocoa and Shea butter are both exported to the US and Europe. It was formed in 1996 and is accredited by the Ghana Cocoa Board.

Seven hundred and sixty-two individuals work for it. Adwumapa Buyers Company has six regions in the Aowin-Suaman governmental district. However, it should be noted that Adwumapa Buyers Limited’s districts are not political districts,

but rather how Adwumapa prefers to refer to its different work sites. 4 The Aowin-Suaman electoral district is divided into two constituencies: Aowin and Suaman. Within each seat, the Adwumapa Buyers Limited has three regions or areas of work.

In the Aowin constituency alone, the Adwumapa Buyers have three (3) districts: districts A, C, and D. Suaman is comprised of Districts A, B, and C. It should be mentioned that the Adwumapa region of the Aowin political constituency, letter B,

has been closed down. In the Awoin-Suaman political district, Adwumapa Buyers Limited employs six (6) district managers, eighty-eight (88) purchasing clerks (PCs), fifteen (15) depot keepers or supervisors, seventy-nine (79) depot boys, and twelve (12) security people.

The overall number of workers in the Adwumapa buyers’ limited in the Aowin-Suaman political districts is 200. In each of the Adwumapa buyer’s districts, the district manager supervises the work of the other staff, which includes purchasing clerks, depot keepers, depot boys, and security personnel.

The purchasing clerks go to the villages to buy cocoa beans from farmers, while the depot keepers or supervisors supervise the depot boys’ work. Security workers monitor the cocoa beans at their different depots.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rise in labour unrest, which has resulted in strikes and employee boycotts, has prompted a thorough review of workplace safety procedures. Employer-motivated employee motivation has been shown to increase productivity and improve the employer-worker relationship.

Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 imposes a general duty on employers to ensure the safety of their employees at work to the greatest extent reasonably practicable. Motivation may be required for Adwumapa Buyer Company Limited employees to increase their performance.

However, safety efforts must be adopted in order to increase the performance of various levels of employees inside the organisation. Because there are senior and junior employees, methods for each group may differ.

Such strategies, on the other hand, may be successful only if they are based on research conducted with workers from the various categories listed. The study will investigate the application of safety measures to improve employee job performance.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The basic goal of the study is as follows:

To determine the most essential facilities that contribute to improving employee job performance.
To determine whether or not Adwumapa Buyers Company Limited staff are safe.
Examine whether allocating funding to safety measures affects employee performance.

1.4 Research Questions

This study is guided by the following research question:

What are the most essential facilities that contribute to employee performance improvement?
Does Adwumapa Buyers Company Limited’s staff care about safety?
Does allocating resources to safety measures have an impact on employee performance?

1.5 Significance of Research

The researchers were inspired to undertake a thorough analysis and propose ways to manage several industrial conflicts between employees and employers in order to assure activity coordination and enhance productivity. Productivity can deteriorate as a result of poor employer-employee relations.

For example, worker strikes in the past have resulted in factory closures, resulting in major company losses. The study will attempt to provide more insight on the various factors that contribute to poor employee performance, which can impair productivity. The study will also demonstrate how to implement safety and performance measures to increase employee performance.

1.6 Scope of research

The purpose of this research is to determine the most critical facilities that contribute to the improvement of employees’ job performance. It also evaluates the allocation of resources to safety measures as well as staff performance. And to evaluate the effects of safety on personnel.

Finally, determine how improvements in safety measures lead to an increase in job performance. The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of workplace safety measures on worker performance. This research is exclusive to Adwumapa Buyers Company Limited in Ghana.

1.7 Limitations of the Study

The researchers faced financial constraints, insufficient materials, and a time constraint over the course of the investigation.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Job Performance: Job performance determines whether or not a person does a good job. Job performance is a component of human resource management that is researched academically as part of industrial and organisational psychology.

Safety measures are actions that are taken to reduce the frequency of occurrence of a hazard or to mitigate its consequences in order to reach and/or maintain an acceptable level of risk.
