IMPACT OF TERRORISM ON NIGERIA SECURITY

Abstract

This research looked at the impact of terrorism on Nigerian security. The study’s overall population is 200 residents of chosen local governments in Borno. The researcher collected data using questionnaires as the instrument.

This study used a descriptive survey research approach. The study included 133 respondents who were village heads, students, youths, and married males. The acquired data was organised into tables and analysed using simple percentages and frequencies.

chapter One

Introduction

Background of The study
Terrorism is defined as the use of violent action to attain political goals or to compel the government to act (Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary). It can also be interpreted as utilising violence or threat to achieve a political goal. Terrorism has evolved into a hydra-headed beast, with unprecedented and unforeseen threats both domestically and internationally,

keeping governments in both developed and developing countries on their toes. It has evolved into one of the most intricate and perplexing phenomena of the modern era (Stibli, 2010). Terrorism is currently posing a greater threat than ever before.

It has caused enough harm to society in terms of loss of life and property, economic loss caused by diverting foreign direct investment (FDI) from target countries to non-target countries, and crowding out government resources intended for development by government.

channelling a big part of its money towards security vote.

Nigerian society is becoming increasingly insecure; more people are being involved in various sorts of crime and terrorism, and they are becoming increasingly desperate, cruel, and sophisticated. Terrorist activity has ranged from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) group,

the Oodua People Congress (OPC) group, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) group, and the Maitatsine organisation since independence. Today, new types of violent crimes are frequent in Nigeria.

Kidnapping for ransom, pipeline vandalism, ritual killings, armed robbery, and ethnic confrontations are examples (Ezeah and Osayi, 2014; Robinson, Obayori, and Kingsley, 2014).

According to Ezeah and Osayi (2014), Boko Haram, a terrorist sect whose overt and covert activities have jeopardised the country’s foundation, is one of the most dangerous insecurity threats in Nigeria. Herdsmen’s activities, which jeopardised Nigeria’s unity, are analogous.

Thus, the operations of both Boko Haram and herders currently cause Nigerians to live in fear, not knowing when Boko Haram suicide bombers or herdsmen hidden killings may come their way.

The ease and degree to which suicide bombers and herdsmen carry out their acts demonstrates that the Nigerian government is not on top of the security situation in order to prevent the recurrence of these heinous assaults.

For example, Boko Haram’s recent adoption of 110 female students at Dapchi government girl’s secondary school in Borno state and the killing of 73 people in Benue state in one day by herdsmen are clear indications that the Nigerian government is not doing enough in terms of security to prevent these attacks.

Furthermore, security personnel in Nigeria jeopardise the safety of her citizens’ lives and property. Most other organised terrorist-related crimes, such as bank robberies and kidnappings, follow this pattern (Ezeah and Osayi, 2014).

Similarly, Onuoha (2011) stated that in the aftermath of the Boko Haram revolt in Borno state in 2009, over 3,500 people were internally displaced, over 1,264 children orphaned, 392 women widowed, and properties such as churches and school buildings were burned down.

Statement of the problem

Terrorism and security difficulties in Nigeria have strengthened their activities and become a growing threat to Nigeria’s national security; there is no better time to focus on this issue than now, when Nigeria is confronting major domestic security challenges. As a result, an increasing number of academic articles on these issues have been created.

The purpose of this article is to investigate the difficulties of security and terrorism in Nigeria, as well as methods of controlling its siege on the polity. The subsequent sections of this article address conceptual concerns, the causes of insecurity and terrorism in Nigeria, and the repercussions of insecurity and terrorism in Nigeria.

Aim of the study

The study’s aims are as follows:

determining the impact of terrorism on national unity.

To investigate the sources of terrorism in Nigeria.

determining the impact of terrorism on national security.

To investigate the future of terrorism in Nigeria.

research Hypotheses

The researcher developed the following research hypotheses in order to successfully complete the study:

H0: Terrorism has no influence on national unity.

H1: Terrorism has an impact on national unity.

Terrorism has little effect on national security, according to H02.

Terrorism has an impact on national security.

The significance of the research

The research will provide a comprehensive picture of the impact of terrorism on Nigerian security. The study will be extremely beneficial to both students and the Nigerian government.

The study will provide a long-term answer to Nigeria’s insecurity problem. The study will also be used as a resource for other researchers who will be working on a similar topic.

The scope and limitations of the study

The study’s scope includes the impact of terrorism on Nigerian security. The researcher comes upon a constraint that limits the scope of the investigation;

a) RESEARCH MATERIAL AVAILABILITY: The researcher’s research material is insufficient, restricting the scope of the investigation.
b) TIME: The study’s time frame does not allow for broader coverage because the researcher must balance other academic activities and examinations with the study.
Finance: The costs of photocopying, typing, and moving from one location to another to obtain information are significant. Financial difficulties not only hampered movement but also drained one’s desire for studying.

Definition of Terms

Terrorism is defined as the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, particularly against civilians, to achieve political goals.

Security is the absence of or resistance to possible harm caused by others. Beneficiaries of security may include individuals and social groups, objects and organisations, ecosystems, or any other entity or phenomenon that is susceptible to unfavourable change.
