APPRAISAL OF THE ROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT IN POVERTY ALLEVIATION IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the government’s participation in poverty alleviation in Nigeria, with a focus on the National Poverty Eradication Programme NAPEP. In chapter one, the research introduces the study’s backdrop and provides a brief historical background.

Some of the goals of this research are to determine the impact of NAPEP on poverty eradication in Nigeria, strategies for poverty reduction, and to identify the various government programmes on poverty alleviation and to determine whether the programme,

NAPEPâ€TMs skill acquisition and youth empowerment programmes, has had a positive impact on people.  The study included a review of relevant literature. The researcher collected data from respondents using both primary and secondary sources.

In chapter four, the responses from the administered questionnaire were analysed, and the hypothesis developed in chapter one were evaluated, and a choice was taken, with the alternative hypothesis approved and the null hypothesis rejected.

According to the findings of the study, the government’s empowerment efforts have pulled many citizens out of abject poverty. The data also suggest that the program’s success has been hampered by a lack of appropriate execution of government policies on poverty reduction.

It was also determined that one of the fundamental issues identified as impeding the program’s efficient operation is “inadequate facilities and logistic support.” This, it was discovered, has had a negative impact on the successful operation of the rural-based programmes.

Based on the findings, it was advised that the programme be supplied with the appropriate facilities, equipment, and logistics in order to improve performance, particularly if the programmes’ self-reliance goal is to be met. Credit systems should be appropriately supported, improved, and designed to provide basic loans to graduates of various skill development programmes,

allowing them to start their own businesses. It was also suggested that there be effective monitoring of the entire program’s actions at all phases of implementation. Diversion of funds/resources to other uses, as well as resource mismanagement, will be prevented in this manner.

As a result, the monitoring department of this initiative should be made more efficient and successful in identifying problems and providing practical solutions.
