MANPOWER TRAINING AND UTILIZATION IN THE NIGERIA IMMIGRATION SERVICE
ABSTRACT
Between 1999 and 2014, this study examined workforce training and utilisation in the Nigeria Immigration Service, Calabar Command.The study’s objectives are to determine whether manpower training in the Nigeria Immigration Service has improved adequate border protection in Nigeria;
whether trained staff in the Nigeria Immigration Service, Calabar Command have been fully utilised; and whether selection for training of staff in the Nigeria Immigration Service, Calabar is based on merit.
For data gathering, the study used both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, as well as descriptive qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The study discovered, using the Organisational Learning Theory and ex-post-facto, that manpower training has improved the utilisation of staff in the Nigeria Immigration Service, Calabar Command;
we also discovered that the criteria for training selection in the Nigeria Immigration Service, Calabar Command are based on merit. It was also discovered that the training received by the Nigeria Immigration Service Calabar Command aided them in the security of Nigeria’s borders.
As a result, the study recommended that manpower training in any organisation be purely merit-based and not politicised, and that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Minister of Interior, plan a well-structured training programme for the Nigeria Immigration Service,
that a compensation policy be implemented in the Nigeria Immigration to encourage proper utilisation of staff in the organisation, and that the federal government adequately fund the training programme.
