THE INFLUENCE OF DEMOGHRAPHIC VARIABLES ON THE PERCEPTION OF SCIENCE TEACHERS TOWARDS THE INCLUSION OF HIV/AIDS EDUCATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS
ABSTRACT
Health is wealth is a common saying among the people. For people to live a healthy life many precautions will have to be taken. The health condition of the people is of great concern to government and people who are involved in health care delivery. One of the health problems facing our society.
A correlational research design was used to investigate the predictive influence of some socio-demographic variables on parents’ attitudes toward the inclusion of HIV and AIDS education in Lagos State schools. For the study, 400 parents of pupils and students from four primary and secondary schools in Lagos with diverse demographic characteristics were chosen at random.
For data collection, a 38-item self-report Parents-of-Adolescents HIV and AIDS/Sexuality Education Attitudinal questionnaire (r = 0.71) was used. For data processing, descriptive statistics and Multiple Regression analysis were used.
The findings revealed that the eight independent variables predicted parents’ attitudes toward HIV and AIDS education in schools. However, level of education ( = 2.692, T = 4.157 P 0.05), marriage type ( = 1.699, T = 2.703, P 0.05), sex ( = -1.520, T = 2.414 P 0.05), and occupation ( = -1.322, T = 1.843 P 0.05) each contributed significantly to the prediction, whereas religion, tribe, occupation, and social economic status did not.
The implications of the findings were discussed, and it was suggested that when designing and implementing HIV and AIDS interventions for parents in Lagos State schools, counselling psychologists should consider variables identified as significant in this study.
