THE BENIN KINGDOM AND HER DELTAN NEIGHBORS

Figures and abstract

This study concentrated on aspects of pre-colonial Isoko sociopolitical relations with their neighbors in South Central Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. It aims to shed light on the relationship between internal and external dynamics, as well as the resulting changes and continuities in Isoko relations with their Urhobo, Ijaw, Ukwuani, and Aboh neighbors.

The work is based on the historical method and interpretations, and it employs both primary and secondary data to achieve its goal.

The study concludes that intergroup relations in the region are heavily influenced by their somewhat common ancestral origin, geographical proximity, shared common environmental and cultural practices, and exposure to similar external influences.

This is done in the context of the current trajectory of the Niger Delta’s sociopolitical conflicts, which has serious implications for both national and international interests.
