BROADCASTING MEDIA AS MEANS OF DISSEMINATING AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION IN NIGERIA

Abstract

The study mentions broadcast media as a means of disseminating agricultural information to farmers in Osun State’s Obokun Local Government Area. In countries with low literacy rates, such as Nigeria, Malaysia, and India, the choice of communication media is critical.

In this regard, television and radio are important because they transfer modern agricultural technology to literate and illiterate farmers alike, even in rural areas, in a short period of time, enlightening farmers on the use of various technologies to boost agricultural development.

This paper makes an attempt to discuss the significance of radio and television and their impact on agriculture through sound communication. The diffusion of innovation, agenda setting, and source credibility theories were used to justify the importance of broadcast media in agricultural information, particularly for rural dwellers.

However, the researcher used a survey method to conduct this research, administering 120 questionnaires to selected respondents within the council area using a multi-stage sampling technique.

Descriptive statistics were used to analyze and interpret the data collected. According to the findings, the people of Obokun local government have access to at least two (2) television stations and at least three (3) radio stations. A greater proportion of respondents said they listen to agricultural programs on broadcast media to some extent.

Radio and television should mobilize communities to the best agricultural practices through appropriate messages and information needed to raise agricultural awareness among people, while broadcast media should also translate agricultural information into users’ local language so that farmers can digest and understand it.
