PROPOSAL ON EFFECTS OF HEALTH AND SAFETY ON EMPLOYEE’S PRODUCTIVITY IN GHANA

1. Introduction.

Occupational health and safety is the process of ensuring that workers remain safe and healthy in the job in order to maximise their ability to perform. Employers, labour unions, society, and the government all rely on the workplace to ensure the viability of businesses.

The quality of the office environment influences employee motivation and performance. How well people engage with the organisation, particularly their immediate environment, has a significant impact on their error rate, amount of innovation and collaboration with other employees, absenteeism, and, ultimately, the number of years they stay on the job.

Organisational health and safety standards are designed to promote and maintain the highest level of physical, mental, and social well-being for workers in all industries that have an impact on employee health.

In today’s globalised world, developing countries like Ghana have a competitive advantage in terms of workforce costs. Labour costs have become an essential consideration in product and service development, as most businesses strive to maximise efficiency from their workforce and equipment.

Lehtinen (2001) argued that health and safe working conditions improve productivity and thus help developing countries become competitive in the globalised world economy, which is why many organisations are working to ensure that health and safety is effectively managed at the workplace.

According to Hughes (2007), health is the protection of people’s bodies and minds against work-related illnesses. He also defined safety as the protection of individuals from bodily harm. Hughes (2007), on the other hand, defined health and safety as the welfare of workers

or the protection of facilities to sustain persons’ health and well-being at work. Cole (2002) defines safety hazards as those that might cause immediate injury to employees, whereas health hazards cause gradual deterioration of their health.

Productivity is defined as how much individuals can produce in a specific time period with the least amount of labour and resources. It is also a ratio that assesses how well a business allocates resources to goods and services.

The work environment refers to the situations, influences, stress, competitive, cultural, demographic, economic regulation, and technological variables that affect an organization’s existence, operations, and growth.

According to Sundstrom et al. (1994), the majority of people spend around 70% of their lives at work, which has a significant impact on their mental state, behaviours, abilities, and performance.

Better outcomes and increased productivity are considered to arise from a better workplace environment. Research suggests that discontent, messy offices, and physical surroundings all contribute to decreased employee productivity (Carnevale, 1992).

The purpose of businesses implementing health and safety programmes is to nurture a safe and risk-free work environment for employees and stakeholders in general, ensuring personnel efficiency and, as a result, maximising productivity.

Productivity has been an important contributor to company success since occupational health and safety has a direct impact on cost savings and profitability. An uncomfortable work environment can have a negative impact on worker motivation, leading to less effort at work and lower performance.

To reduce occupational accidents and diseases, employers and employees must collaborate to create a “self-generating effort” (Robbins, 2004). Organisations must take employee complaints seriously and prioritise safety and well-being.

A healthy and safe work environment reduces expenses and improves organisational performance. If work-related illnesses and accidents can be accounted for on the balance sheet,

the organisation can devote the same managerial effort and imagination to developing and maintaining a healthy and safe workplace as managers do to other aspects of the business. As Robbins (2004) observed, “accident prevention can be integrated into the overall economic activity of the firm.”

2. Statement of Problem

In recent years, some workers have been temporarily or permanently disabled as a result of a lack of safety knowledge when handling machines and equipment, failing to follow simple procedures when completing a task, or management failing to provide the necessary safety standards and resources to employees.

Every business is legally responsible for ensuring the health and safety of its employees, as well as other people affected by its operations, such as customers and suppliers.

Poor health and safety practices cause disease, accidents, and considerable costs for the company. Effective health and safety procedures pay for themselves and help organisations improve their reputation with consumers, regulators, and staff.

The human resource is one of the many adaptable resources that an organisation relies on for output. As a result, effective and efficient human resource management will contribute to the organization’s overall effectiveness and efficiency.

Although many organisations recognise the importance of human resources, they fail to recognise that as part of their human resource management practices, management must ensure that employees work in a safe and healthy environment that promotes their optimum utilisation.

It should be noted that accidents are costly for both the affected worker and the business. As a result, management and employees must make every effort to prevent workplace accidents.

Despite efforts by management and staff to maintain workplace safety, workplace accidents continue to increase, indicating that the work environment remains unsafe.

This study aims to analyse the impact of health and safety standards on productivity at Accra Rubber Estates Limited. The study will give recommendations to improve employee performance and safety.3. Research Objectives

General Objectives:

The major purpose is to assess the impact of employee health and safety standards on production.
