1.1. Background for the Study
The magnitude and relevance of leadership in various organisations has gone unacknowledged and unobserved for a long time. However, its significance has now been recognised, and it has become a global hot topic.
Effective leadership increases staff productivity throughout all areas of a country’s economy. Leadership is a unique form of influential behaviour. It can be observed in a variety of social contexts and is particularly noticeable. Leadership is defined as a process in which one or more people persuade a group of people to move in a specific direction.
Leadership has been applied in a variety of fields, including politics, business, academia, and social work. Messick and Krammer (2004) contend that the extent to which an individual demonstrates leadership attributes is determined not just by his characteristics and personal abilities
but also by the features of the circumstance and environment in which he finds himself. As a result, an individual will support the organisation if he believes it will help him achieve his personal objectives and aims; otherwise, his interest will wane.
Good leadership contributes to the success of businesses and non-profit organisations. Without leadership, organisations advance too slowly, stagnate, and lose direction (Northhouse, 2007).
Much of the literature on organisations emphasises decision-making and indicates that if decisions are made on time, completely, and correctly, everything will go smoothly.
However, making a decision does not change anything. After making a choice, an organisation must address the issue of implementation, which is how to get things done in a timely and effective manner. Implementation challenges are mostly about how leaders influence behaviour, change the course of events, and overcome resistance.
Thus, effective leadership is critical in successfully implementing decisions, making it a key component of effective management and the delivery of high-quality health care in Nigerian medical institutions and other organisations.
