INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND FOR THE STUDY
1.0 Introduction
Small firms are increasingly being recognised as significant contributors to economic growth and development. They contribute significantly to job development and the provision of low-cost goods and services.
Over the previous few decades, there have been a number of changes in the way global business is conducted, including trade liberalisation, regional economic integration, and developments in information communications. Despite these developments, small firms continue to play an important role in overall economic activity (Reddy 2007).
Epileptic power supply refers to a condition in which there are frequent power outages in a certain location, which can take the form of low voltage when there is any power supply available.
This can occur at either the generating or transmission end, but it is ultimately felt at the consuming end, and any country that is constantly confronted with an intermittent supply of energy is always hampered in development and poses a risk to investors.
Small business owners and manufacturers have rightfully complained that any interruption in electricity supplies will have a severe impact on their output. Residential consumers of electricity have claimed that power interruptions can impair their electrical and electronic appliances.
Small and medium-sized business owners have confessed that unreliable electricity is the bane of their operations. As a result, the electrical supply has an impact on every aspect of our socioeconomic existence.
1.1 Statement of the Problem
Poor power supply in Nigeria jeopardises the performance of small enterprises. The issue is critical because of the high expense of relying on fuel and operating businesses with generators and inefficient plants rather of using the funds to purchase additional goods and services to expand their operations.
Nigeria suffers from frequent power outages, and as a result, many businesses are relocating to neighbouring nations. The result of this situation is job displacement, a high level of poverty and unemployment, and many potential entrepreneurs are discouraged from beginning small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) due to the unfavourable conditions.
Due to Nigeria’s low electrical supply, government efforts promoting small businesses are ineffective. Given these issues, this study will look into epileptic power supply and small company performance in Nigeria.
1.2 Objective of the Study
The following are the study’s aims.
a) To investigate the issues surrounding epileptic power supply in Nigeria.
b). Assess the reasons of epileptic power supply in Nigeria.
c). Investigate the effect of epileptic power supply on small company performance in Nigeria.
d). Identify potential solutions to Nigeria’s weak power supply.
1.3 RESEARCH QUESTIONS.
The following research questions were generated based on the study’s objectives.
(a) What are the problems with epileptic power supply in Nigeria?
(b) What causes epileptic power supply in Nigeria?
(c) How does epileptic power supply affect the functioning of small businesses in Nigeria?
(d) What are some feasible remedies to Nigeria’s epileptic power supply problem?
1.4 Significance of the Study
The study will help the state and federal governments understand the necessity of adequate power supply, as well as identify the impact of epileptic power supply in Nigeria and make recommendations for how to solve the problem. It will also be useful as a reference material for other scholars/researchers and anyone looking for information on the subject.
1.5 Scope and Limitations of the Study
SCOPE OF THE STUDY:
This study investigates epileptic power supply and small business performance in Nigeria, using selected small and medium-sized firms in Uyo as case studies.
