INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Leadership is an essential component of all successful social organisations and human groups.
Even within the family, the father must be capable of taking the lead in managing his wife and children. It’s no surprise that good leaders had to find their own way.
Leadership begins when a man or woman identifies his or her life’s purpose, which ignites a passion and inspires others to follow voluntarily. It is a mental trait that allows a man to set himself the goal of appreciating a problem, proposing answers, and moving himself and the group or society forward.
It’s no surprise that many people have given up hope of discovering something worthwhile. Leadership. People want their leaders to be competent and to make genuine attempts to improve things.
It is true that some leaders have attained some level of success. A rural leader can typically count on his subjects’ respect and support if he provides them with a reasonable level of peace and secure living conditions.
However, if people lose faith in him for any reason, someone else may assume authority. The prior understanding of leadership was based on two fundamental assumptions about how leaders arise in groups or organisations. The first is the “Great Man Theory of History,” which attributes more events in history to the actions of great leaders.
It is well known that great men of history assume power and authority to lead others only on the basis of their leadership talents. That is why world-changing figures such as Hite Napoleon and De Gualle were seen as “great man” models.
Early leadership research held that strong leaders are born with certain characteristics; thus, one should be able to identify the qualities possessed by effective leaders and presume that all individuals gifted with these characteristics will be effective leaders.
For example, the Greek philosopher Plate was among the first to propose that exceptional leaders were born with greatness.
As a result, leadership is the process of persuading others to work willingly and diligently towards an organization’s goals.
It is the art of leading others to achieve collective or organisational goals. The second concept of leadership contends that the emergence or selection of a leadership is unrelated to the actual necessity, circumstance, or position in which a group may find itself. Thus, a work-time leader may not always become a peace-time leader. The core of leadership is followership.
In other words, a person’s effectiveness as a leader is determined by the willingness of others to follow.
