EXPERT SYSTEM FOR LOCAL AREA NETWORK TROUBLESHOOTING
Chapter One: Introduction
1.1) Background.
The Information Age has led to increased reliance on information and data exchange, particularly through the internet and other networks. Local Area Networks (LAN) are commonly used to connect offices, enterprises, or organisations inside a specific location.
Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) are used to connect cities or major geographical areas, while Wide Area Networks (WAN) are used to connect bigger regions. Technological advancements aim to communicate and disseminate information efficiently and quickly.
Networks, particularly Local Area Networks (LAN), are ubiquitous in modern businesses and organisations, including offices, hospitals, hotels, churches, and educational institutions (2).
Even residential properties, etc. A network is a collection of devices or nodes connected by communication lines. Nodes or devices can include computers, printers, and other data-transmitting or receiving devices [1].
LANs connect computers to enable collaborative computing and knowledge management within a corporation. An internetwork can facilitate interconnection. A local network of computers is connected to the internet using proper hardware (router, modem, etc.).
The success of networks has been hindered by their susceptibility to failure. Possible causes include issues with interconnecting nodes (e.g. computers, printers), physical cable connections, and communication gear.
These factors increase the vulnerability of the network. The interconnected nature of a network system makes it vulnerable to problems that can propagate to other nodes, perhaps shutting down the system as a whole. This is 3.
This is especially true for Star and Ring network topologies.
This vulnerability necessitates regular network maintenance and repairs, particularly during faults. Troubleshooting and maintenance are essential components of network administration.
1.2) Aims and Objectives
The primary goals of this initiative are to provide for:
A software package can help troubleshoot and maintain LANs by providing step-by-step instructions for users to follow.
An expert system for tutoring and training on network operations, particularly LANs.
1.3) The Need for Project Work
This project offers a solution for real-time diagnosis and network maintenance. Maintaining network availability is a significant difficulty in communication networks.
Communication networks are prone to frequent breakdowns. Organisations using such networks should have a rapid and effective way to restore defective or malfunctioning networks to normal operation.
Provide easy access to troubleshooting and maintenance tools for the network and its equipment, including hardware and software. This project serves that objective.
This project aims to give comprehensive knowledge and training for non-network professionals, including those with different backgrounds.
experienced tiers of network operators who conduct network activities.
This work can serve as a valuable lesson for network functions due to its presenting style.
1.4) SCOPE OF THE WORK
This work focuses mostly on Local Area Networks (LAN). This course covers internet network management and maintenance in a specific location, such as a cyber café, research facility, or office space connected to the internet (e.g., banks).
This section focuses on using software to aid with network maintenance. Figure 1.1 illustrates a block diagram of project development stages.
Although this work does not focus on larger networks (e.g., WANs, MANs), it can provide insight into their operations.

Design & Implementation
Steps include testing and validation, programme documentation, knowledge refinement, and modification.
