FACIAL EXPRESSION RECOGNITION – Project Topics for Student
ABSTRACT
To facilitate the learning process, new technologies have been introduced and adopted in the e-learning environment over the last few decades. It is widely acknowledged that emotions play an important role in cognition, influencing information processing, memory, and performance.
Affective computing and computer vision have long been hot research topics in industry, particularly in education. This paper compares the performance levels of two groups of students in the same programming class.
A Video Tutoring System with Facial Expression Recognition (VTSFER) was created as a teaching tool to help with programming course instructions. The system is intelligent enough to recognize emotions via face recognition and was used by BSIT 3rd year students.
The students were divided into two groups, with the second half using the VTSFER. An evaluation was carried out, which determined the level of performance of both groups of students. The t-test statistical tool was used to determine the significant difference.
With a value of 2.1827 and a probability of 0.0382, the t-value was highly significant. The results showed that the second half of the students learned more when using the video tutoring system with facial expression recognition than the first half of the students who used a traditional video tutorial.
Students were engaged and gained more knowledge in learning thanks to the intervention of face expression recognition embedded in video tutorial.
