MOBILE APPLICATION FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Historically, mobile technology took off globally in the mid-1990s, when the ratio of mobile to fixed line phones increased from roughly 1:34 (1991) to about 1:8 (1995). By 2000, there was one mobile phone per less than two mainlines, and by 2003, mobile phone subscriptions had surpassed mainline subscribers for the first time.

Thus, in the course of around ten years, mobile technology has progressed from being a technology for a select few to becoming a largely mainstream technology. Mobile technology is rapidly expanding in underdeveloped countries, as mobile phones are used to replace fixed telephone lines.

Mobile communication technologies are spreading over the world faster than any other communication technology to date. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), mobile technology usage and mobile broadband subscriptions increased dramatically worldwide in 2011.

The most recent advancement in mobile technology has been the development of next-generation mobile phones, or “smart phones,” as well as 3G and 4G networks with additional built-in functions and a variety of mobile apps.

This was due to the widespread availability of mobile internet and the fast decreasing prices of mobile devices and products, which have become an affordable instrument for closing the digital divide between developed and developing countries over the years.

Smartphones, which currently number 1.08 billion units worldwide, are expected to reach 2 billion by 2015, establishing them as the most popular computing and internet access device today and in the future.

Tablets have also begun to gain traction, particularly after the introduction of new lower-cost tablets into the market in late 2011. According to IDC (March 2012), 68.7 million media tablets were sold in 2011, with the number expected to climb to 106.1 million units by the end of 2012 and 198.2 million units in 2016.

Undoubtedly, the rapid development in the number of smart phones and tablets will have a significant impact on the number of mobile broadband subscribers and Internet users

reinforcing the move from mobile voice to mobile data traffic. As a result, massive network upgrades, faster speeds, and additional spectrum will be necessary.
