Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of Study

The mistakes associated with the existing manual way of processing students’ results in most Nigerian institutions make it not only desirable, but also necessary, to utilise a computerised approach to fully measure students’ academic progress.

The manual methods being used have a number of drawbacks. They make the process time-consuming and error-prone, while also causing examination findings to be published late.

Worse, sometimes incorrect grades are submitted, and students’ grade point averages are calculated incorrectly. As a result, the accumulated inaccuracies generated eventually lead to the issuance of an incorrect class of degree.

Some students may receive unjustified good grades for their degrees, while others may be unfairly victimised, causing anger. In this instance, the reputation of the department(s) in question, as well as the University as a whole, may suffer.

The difficulty that arises is to create a technique of processing examination results that is both accurate and timely.

Result processing is a routine task. Every semester in a higher education institution requires an assessment of the students’ performance.

This assessment typically takes the form of examinations, tests, several practicals, laboratories, and the like. Without an appraisal of the kids, there will be little need to work hard.

Assessment takes the form of a rewards system. Students are interested in a competitive setting. Comparing this to the primary and secondary education systems, where pupils are assessed in positions, each student works extremely hard to achieve the top outcomes.

The higher education system is no different. At the end of each academic semester, the semester’s academic activities are tallied. The problem here is that the students’ degrees of interest and expertise are converted into relative figures, which are then ranked.

Each student at every level has results to compute. The task of result processing and other academic activities necessitates the appointment of course advisers to handle such duties.

By definition, a result is the outcome of an activity; the end of a problem or experiment after a certain amount of time. At the end of each academic semester, the outcomes of exams, tests, practicals, and labs are tabulated, and grades are assigned accordingly.

This is handled by the individual course coordinators. The level course adviser handles the following step in the result processing process. Each level of every department has its own specialised course adviser.

The course adviser operates on the list of results of all students in his/her level as well as those of other students who sat for courses at other levels, either as borrowed or carry over courses. The course adviser’s role is to transform the grades submitted by the students into grade equivalents.

There has been a need in institutions for automated data storage methods. There have been various attempts to design systems for automating result processing, but the majority of this project’s work will focus on the processing of undergraduate student outcomes, as well as other course adviser functions.

Using the Information Management Technology department as a case study, this work focuses on providing alternative solutions to general problems associated with result processing, adding and dropping courses, registering extra course units

timely computation of students’ grades, course registrations, and, most importantly, security issues that prevent unauthorised access to results by students and lecturers.

 

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The issues with the current system for processing result records range from sluggish record processing and referencing to inefficiency in managing result records, as well as insecurity and inaccuracy in result entering.

This project will alleviate challenges related with the manual technique of processing student results by developing an application package. This is done to increase efficiency in terms of accuracy, storage, and time in producing student results.

The manual approach is understudied, and the current procedure has been documented. The need for a window base system is highlighted, as well as the limitations of this study endeavour.

 

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The goal of this project is to create a secondary school results processing system for God Saves Schools.

The goal of this project is to design and create a system that can:

Provide software that produces results that are accurate, timely, and error-free.

Maintain a dependable database for storing student records and updating it as needed.

Restrict unauthorised access to the students’ records.

Produce a meaningful report on students’ overall performance at the end of each academic semester, provided in the form of tables.

To minimise and reduce the complications caused by manual system of result processing.

1.4 Methodology.

This application will be developed using Microsoft Visual C# as the programming language and MySQL as the database.
