UNEMPLOYMENT AND CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETIES.

ABSTRACT

During the research report, several salient features should be kept in mind to facilitate comprehension of the project’s purpose and content.

An initial examination is conducted to determine and identify the significant role of the National Directorate of Employment in addressing the problem of unemployment, as outlined in its four programmes: the National Youth Employment and Vocational Skill Development Programmes, Agricultural Sector Employment, and Special Public Work Programme. It is important to acknowledge the contributions of Federal Government entities such as NAPEP and ITF.

Similarly, a realistic approach to address the persistent issue of widespread unemployment and underemployment in Nigeria, which has been exacerbated by the discovery of crude oil, is to explore other solutions that reduce dependence on oil, such as the implementation of a second-tier foreign exchange market.

It simply advocates for the development of a diversified economy as a means of addressing the pervasive issue of unemployment that has significantly impacted our economy.

Furthermore, the design and methodology employed are thoroughly elucidated. For example, factors such as the population and sample size, the utilisation of primary and secondary data, and the chosen method of analysis, among others.

Conversely, the research utilises the percentage and tabulation approach as a descriptive statistical instrument, which ensures that the analysis is comprehensible and reliable. The presentation and analysis of data serve as a compelling demonstration of feasible work.

It is imperative for the federal government and non-governmental organisations to collaborate in order to effectively address the complex issue of unemployment in cooperative societies.

Entrepreneurial training and development should be integrated into all levels of our educational curriculum, starting from primary schools to universities, in order to prevent excessive reliance on government-funded jobs and instead foster innovation and creativity.

Chapter 1

Introduction

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

We have successfully grasped and comprehended the crucial aspects of the topic being discussed. Firstly, we have recognised that the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) is one of the support agencies specifically focused on addressing unemployment and underemployment in Nigeria.

The Federal Government founded it in November 1986 with the primary purpose of addressing the issue of mass unemployment in the country, as outlined in its four core programmes. It was officially opened on January 30, 1987.

However, it should be noted that co-operative societies are not free from the requirement to promote the creation of employment possibilities for co-operators.

The concept of co-operative encompasses several dimensions of social, political, and economic spheres. An example of this is the Nigeria Agricultural and Co-operative Bank (NACB), which was established in 1973 by the federal government with an initial capital of twelve million naira (N12m). Cooperative organisations in the agriculture sector are being encouraged to provide financial facilities.

The National Directorate of Employment has the primary objectives of producing employment and is committed to achieving them. Facilitating the development of an entrepreneurial mindset among co-operators and job searchers, thereby shifting their focus away from government-funded employment and significantly reducing the prevailing unemployment rate.

Prior to concluding, the federal government has been making a deliberate and focused effort to address the issue of widespread unemployment.

Since 1999, Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration has been addressing this issue through the implementation of the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), which continues to this day (as of 2005). The objective is to eradicate unemployment.

In August 2005, the National Directorate of Employment announced multiple training programmes and the creation of numerous job opportunities for unemployed Nigerians.
