REVIEW OF THE COURSE CONTENTS OF BUS 213 (CO-OPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT).

Chapter One: Introduction
Bus 213 is the code assigned to a course called Co-operative Development. The course is provided to all students in the school of business studies, however it is situated in the Department of Co-operative Economics and Management (CEM).

It was offered during my first semester at NDII. The course was designed to offer students with a better understanding of the growth and development of modern cooperatives around the world.

Mr. C.C Bob Igwe, MBA NINIM, a lecturer in the co-operative Economics Department at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, wrote the course on mimeography.

Given that Bus 213 is about cooperative development, what exactly does the phrase “co-operative and development” mean?
Cooperative means people working together to attain a shared goal (STAN.O. UCHENDU, 1998:2).

It is thus a broad phrase that encompasses a wide range of activities in which two or more individuals collaborate, either formally or informally, temporarily or ad hoc, or on a permanent basis, to achieve a certain legal or unlawful, socially accepted or unaccepted purpose.

The concept of cooperation as an economic and social organ originated among individuals whose means of subsistence were disrupted by the arrival of the machine and factory system. Poverty drove them to endure long hours of work, severe discipline, and the squalor of industrial settlements. Co-operation is defined as a group action to attain a common aim.

Development, on the other hand, might be defined as the act or means of progressive advancement or development of cooperation from crude or cradle, or from a specific speculation to another region of the world.

From one level of maturity to another.
The development of cooperation was not a product of circumstance, but of necessity, as it emerged at a time when it was most needed to save the poor masses from the cruelty of intermediaries and exploitative employers.

1.1 Definition:

Cooperation can be defined as the union of people working towards a common goal. The people did not band together for a common goal: to fall from heaven. There are corporate firms that work together to meet their demands.

The INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATIVE ALLIANCE (I C A OF 1895) defines a cooperative society as “an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprises.”

Furthermore, the ICA provided the most crucial characteristics:

a) A co-operative is defined as an autonomous body that is not subject to government control.

b) Join voluntarily: They should not be compelled to join; instead, raise awareness.

b) A cooperative is a group of people, not capital. The members’ interests must take precedence over those of the capital.

d) The group’s goal is to support its members’ economic requirements as well as their social and cultural aspirations; however, religions, politics, and illegal activities are not permitted.
