ROLE OF WOMEN IN RURAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research was to determine the role of the Ijeudo (Enugu South) women cooperative society in the development of Enugu South Local Government Area in Enugu State.

The study’s subject matter consisted of four hundred and ninety-nine women cooperatives from six registered women cooperatives in the same local government.

A sample size of four hundred and ninety-nine cooperatives was selected from the population of the six registered local governments. The main instruments utilised in the study were a questionnaire and an oral interview.

A total of 550 questionnaires were administered to registered numbers of cooperative societies, of which 499 were completed and returned. One additional questionnaire was administered to the divisional cooperative officers in Enugu South Local Government Area.

He also emphasised the need for cooperative officers in Enugu South Local Government Area to encourage women to invest more in productive projects so that individual loans from the cooperative may be collected more effectively. This would help to create job possibilities for the inhabitants of Enugu South in general.
