CO-OPERATIVE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.

Chapter One: Introduction
Co-operative organisations are attractive in developing areas due to their potential for social change and improving people’s well-being. Governments have devoted resources to encourage and improve co-operatives.

Some governments have evolved to emphasise thrift savings over self-reliance. Thus, the cooperative society has the potential or obligation to influence the overall social economic development of the economy.

If such potentials are effectively realised, the impact of this association will be enormously beneficial to the development of the Oji-River local government region, which is the primary focus of this particular research.

Background of the study

In developing countries such as Nigeria and others, they provide for people’s social and economic needs. Self-help and self-reliance efforts should be viewed as the most effective source of economic development in rural areas.

Through collective effort, people will pool their resources for cooperative endeavours, and their values and social amenities may improve their quality of life or standard of living.

Self-help efforts increase the standard of living in society. However, self-help efforts will only produce positive results if the community is gifted with good leadership who is willing to sacrifice time, morale, and energy to mobilise the people to embark on economic projects.

Many villages in various states of Nigeria lack patriotic leadership capable of mobilising people to help themselves. Leadership is the most important aspect of a nation’s, local, and state’s development.

The society must have a good leadership quality that will allow them to coordinate the affairs of others rather than mobilising people for self-help projects such as community development and looking to the government for everything, as the turnout desires.

Most governments, including Nigeria, have recently recognised the importance of cooperatives as a powerful means of production and also machinery for improving the level of living.

Countries such as Germany, Sweden, India, and others have few realisations of this earlier stated goal. In the stages of growth, we should pay special attention to cooperatives in Nigeria, as the government and local governments have recognised that cooperatives are effective agents of economic development.

However, while cooperative potential is a crucial instrument for social transformation, there are numerous obstacles and bottlenecks that must be addressed in order to achieve critical economic results

It is true that the intensity of cooperative participation in the major sector of the economy has expanded significantly. The government also recognises agricultural facilities as technical services that contribute to the economic development of rural farmers.

These agricultural cooperatives also help rural farmers maximise the value of their produce, and through the group, these farmers learn about modern mechanisation systems.

Primary cooperative organisations in rural areas ensure a consistent supply of commodities from local manufacturing enterprises. State-level consumer cooperative to assure a consistent and adequate supply of necessary items to rural residents.

Cooperative movements in rural communities have also helped to reduce housing challenges in the long run. They cannot offer housing for her entire population.

Marketing cooperatives play an important role in rural development. They ensure that farmers can negotiate a better and higher price for their products, as well as maintain proper sales of their production.

Statement of Problems

This research will be successfully exploratory in their case study/sought how best to enhance rural areas of Nigeria, with a focus on the Oji-River Local Government Area of Enugu State.

For a developing society to develop, the entire population must be mobilised. Most societies have recognised this truth, hence many governments are looking for institutions that can be engaged to aid in this effort. Cooperative societies appear to have a strong chance of helping in this regard.

KUNLE BOLASADE; Cooperatives and Their Role in Economic Development, Guardian, August 12, 1999, page 24.
In conclusion, cooperative societies can aid in the transformation of our economy in rural areas through human relationships

which include the attitudes of the majority of rural people towards life, work, and growth, as well as their self-reliance and resourcefulness, and can help improve basic social infrastructures.

Environmental issues are one of the challenges they face. They are operating in this manner due to the rural area’s inadequate development.

They lacked basic infrastructure, and the majority of individuals in the rural environment of the Oji-River local government region are uneducated, making the establishment of cooperative societies extremely challenging.

The cooperative group also faces financial challenges because the majority of its members are from rural areas. Because these members are underprivileged, they have difficulty obtaining financial support from banking institutions to fund their entrepreneurial initiative due to a lack of collateral. They largely rely on government grants.

Mismanagement and a lack of strong leadership are two more issues that many cooperative societies face. Because of the management committee’s illiteracy and inadequate educational background, as well as the members of the society at large, the society’s efficiency is extremely low.

Furthermore, as a result of this dilemma, cooperatives are having difficulty transforming our rural surroundings. As a result, the purpose of this research is to address cooperative and economic development issues in the Oji-River local government region and throughout Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

This study is being performed to obtain important information about the remarkable impact of operatives in the transformation of both people and economic material resources in the rural parts of Enugu state’s Oji-River local government.

SCOPE AND LIMITS OF THE STUDY

This study covers the entire Oji-River local government region and assesses the effectiveness and contribution of cooperatives to Oji-River’s economic development between 2000 and 2004.

Rural areas lack basic infrastructure such as roads, piped water, markets, hospitals, and electrical supplies. Stores in the rural areas of Oji-River local government, including Achi, Inyi, Awlaw, and Akpugoeze, as well as some parts of Oji-River city (wonderful).

Oji-River local government region lacks decent motorable roads, particularly those leading to Achi, Inyi, Awlaw, and Akpugoeze, resulting in significant increases in transport fees and other challenges.

As a result of this dilemma, individuals abandon their homes and relocate from rural to urban areas in quest of better work opportunities and other enjoyable aspects of life.

Significance of the Study

The study is significant because it focuses on the effective management of cooperatives and their contribution to the economic growth of Oji-River from 2000 to 2004, as well as the value of beneficiary participation in projects.

The report will also serve as a policy guide for individuals interested in the cooperative and economic development of the Oji-River local government. Though the town has its non-potentials, both cooperative and non-cooperative states are as follows:

1. POLICE COLLEGE: For the training of police officers in local government and throughout Nigeria.

2. FEDERAL SCHOOL OF HEALTH AND TECHNOLOGY: For training nurses and their equivalents in local governments.

3. FEDERAL CO-OPERATIVE COLLEGE: To teach cooperative experts in all cooperative professions, including extension workers, in the rural areas of the Oji River local government region.

4. National Electric Power Authority OJI RIVER: The electrical power authority is in charge of ensuring that all sundries have steady electricity supply.

5. GOOD NATURAL PURE WATER: This water is inherently pure, and it has some other minor potentials that are used as a yardstick by adjacent local governments and the state as a whole.

However, cooperative and economic development are critical, particularly during the period when the federal government and states intend to use cooperatives to accomplish economic development at the grassroots level.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

This investigation was conducted effectively and successfully in Oji-River.

My inquiry was arranged based on the following questions:

1. Are the existing cooperative societies in the local government area viable enough to have made major contributions to the town’s economic development between 2000 and 2004?

2. Is there sufficiently viable economic development in the Oji-River local government region between 2000 and 2004?

3. What issues hampered the successful mobilisation of cooperative and economic development by the Oji-River local government from 2000 to 2004?

4. What services did members of existing cooperative societies provide to the area’s economic development between 2000 and 2004?

5. What aspects of cooperative societies have been interviewed in the Oji-River local government region, etc.
