IMPACT OF INADEQUATE CAPITAL ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF COOPERATIVES

ABSTRACT

Revenue generating is the foundation and pathway to modern progress. Thus, the study sought to examine the impact of cooperative capital on the growth of cooperative organisations.

This is because cooperatives, as a powerful economic development instrument and the closest to the people, particularly in rural regions, required revenue to offer basic social services to them.

However, it is sad that the cooperative management has failed to meet expectations, particularly in terms of providing basic social facilities to rural residents. Thus, the research aims were to assess the extent to which insufficient capital had hampered the development of these cooperatives.

The researcher collected the necessary data using both primary and secondary methods. The data collected through the questionnaire was presented in tables and summarised as simple percentages.

Some of the findings included poor area development, a lack of basic social amenities for rural residents, and a lack of income to maintain current infrastructures.

The researcher consequently advised that the cooperative provide critical services of high quality. By doing so, people’s interests will be focused towards providing maximum support to cooperatives, resulting in rural development.
