ROLE OF TELEVISION IN EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ON THE PREVENTIVE MEASURES AGAINST THE SPREAD OF CORONA VIRUS

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.0 Background to the Study

In the event of a disease outbreak in a country, it is the responsibility of the government, through the Ministry of Health, to rise to the challenges by appropriating a significant amount of money and establishing facilities to combat the virus, as well as non-governmental organisations and other national and international health and co-operation.

Organisations must create awareness through mass media and other communication channels by sensitising the public about the causes, signs, and symptoms of the disease

as well as preventive and protective measures against the disease; thus, the outbreak of Corona virus diseases (COVID-19) necessitated the same procedure of creating awareness.

The spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 has undoubtedly caught the world off guard and unprepared, leading the affected countries to experience terrible death crises, economic breakdown, and other consequences.

In Nigeria, the presence of the deadly virus known as coronavirus, COVID-19, was officially confirmed on February 27, 2020, after a virology laboratory was conducted at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital on the suspected Italian man who arrived in Nigeria from Milan on February 24, 2020, via Turkish Airlines.

An awareness programme on any issue simply provides extensive information on the topic at hand. Television is a vital means for disseminating information to the public, and the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) is one of many channels with official responsibilities for transmitting this information through television.

NTA has so many branches and substations throughout the country. Television is an effective instrument for conveying information, concepts, and ideas to both broad and targeted audiences. It contributes significantly to public health.

goals

Over the years, the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) has done an excellent job of disseminating information, educating the public, and advocating for causes, particularly during key events.

Television stations are expected to create jingles, advertisements, and programmes to educate the public about coronavirus prevention and safety measures.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM.

Community awareness of the risk factors for Corona infection and the precautions people might take. As a result, the government, charitable organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and other agencies have created numerous awareness campaigns about the Corona virus.

These campaigns include placing messages and jingles on radio and television stations, as well as distributing posters throughout communities, as part of a long-term programme to educate the public and help prevent further infections.

Others include organising Corona-related lectures and workshops, as well as taking to the streets and towns to educate the people on how to respond to the epidemic.

The NTA’s need to raise awareness about the Corona virus in the Niger Delta region needs research for various programming awareness initiatives such as jingles and weekly messages on Corona virus information put out by television broadcasting states in the Niger Delta.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The study will look at how television may help educate the public about preventive measures against the spread of the coronavirus in Nigeria.Specifically, it is geared:

To investigate the various strategies to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

To investigate how television stations educate people on preventive actions against the spread of the coronavirus.

To investigate the level of involvement of television authorities in teaching the population about covid-19 preventative measures.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The study in its totality will contribute to the body of knowledge. Specifically, it will raise awareness among government and privately held television stations about the importance of frequent covid-19 prevention efforts.

It will allow media presenters to come up with creative and development-oriented programmes to ensure that the transmission of the coronavirus is kept to a minimum.

It will provide the general public with firsthand information on the need of following safety precautions as advertised on television stations for their own health, as this will help to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

1.5 RESEARCH QUESTION.

1. What precautions are in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus?

2. How does the television station educate people on how to avoid the spread of the coronavirus?

What is the amount of involvement of television authorities in teaching the public about COVID-19 prevention measures?

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study is planned to explore the function of television in educating the public on the preventive measures against the spread of the coronavirus in Nigeria, utilising the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) as a case study.

1.6 Limitations of the Study
Financial constraints- Insufficient funds tend to restrict the researcher’s efficiency in accessing relevant resources, literature, or information, as well as in data collecting (internet, questionnaire, and interview).

Time constraints: The researcher will conduct this investigation while also working on other academic projects. This will reduce the amount of time spent on research.Another constraint is the time issue, which makes it impossible to conduct this study in a more representative manner.

1.7 Definition of Terms:

COVID-19:Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a sickness caused by a novel coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

A role is a set of related behaviours, rights, obligations, beliefs, and standards as conceptualised by people in a social environment.

The term media, which is the plural of medium, refers to the communication channels that we use to spread news, music, films, education, promotional messages, and other information. It encompasses physical and online newspapers and magazines, television, radio, billboards, telephone, the Internet, fax, and billboards.

Television is an electronic system that transmits temporary images of stationary or moving objects along with sound across a wire or over space using hardware that converts light and sound into electrical waves before reconverting them into visible light beams and audible sound.

Preventative measures refer to actions or steps made to avoid disease rather than treat it. Preventive Health Measures include a wide range of treatments that can be implemented to prevent or delay disease onset, as well as to limit disease transmission or exposure.
