JOURNALISM TOOL FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study
Journalism, which is the centre of this study, includes newspapers, papers, and television. The sophistication of these communication channels makes them one of the miracles of modern communication.

According to Norah C. Quebral, development journalism is the art and science of human communication linked to a society’s planned change from a state of poverty to one of dynamic socioeconomic progress, resulting in greater fairness and the full realisation of individual potential.

The World Bank defines development communication as “the integration of strategic communication into development projects.” Radio is Africa’s major mass medium, with the greatest geographical reach and audience size when compared to television (TV), newspapers, and other information and communication technologies.

Overall, radio is experiencing a resurgence, and a large number of radio stations have emerged, resulting in an expansion during the last two decades. This trend is ascribed to democratisation and market liberalisation, as well as more cheap technologies.

Radio appears to have established itself as a development instrument, especially with the advent of community and local radios, which have enabled far more participative and horizontal communication than was feasible with the previous, centralised broadcasting model of the 1960s and 1970s.

Radio appears to have been rediscovered in the context of new ICTs; new technologies have transformed radio into a more two-way medium, and it can help bridge the digital divide by providing a powerful tool for information dissemination and access, particularly for hard-to-reach rural audiences (Balancing Act 2008; BBC WST, 2006).

It is apparent that the use of technology has improved communication at the national and worldwide levels.

In his comment on the role of broadcasting in a developing society, Mr. E.N. Aniebona says the following concerning journalism.

“Journalisms a powerful and effective instrument for achieving national goals such as in need for wide spread education for both children and adults in order to achieve certain prescribed goals in Economic growth, health are political and social awareness, political stability self relief and national identity among others things”

Electronic programming aims to deliver news, drama, interviews, health and family planning, religious, and agricultural programmes.

In his judgement of the media Charlse Ogbunambala of Torch has something to say about journalism.

“Nonetheless, however spectacular these epoch-making achievements in print media may appear, effective media communications cannot be fully realised or released without journalism.” The rationale is evident. Journalism’s message left a more lasting impression than the print medium.”

Journalism includes newspapers, television, and film. Our focus is on newspapers.

People turn to radio for the most up-to-date information during a conflict or crisis.

We listen to the radio when the head of state or governor of a state announces their annual budget.

Conforming to Guglielmc Marconic, “Radio is a potential means of supplementing telegraph, the most import long-distance communication, medium of the late nineteenth century” ,

Radio was the most widely used entertainment and news medium. To some extent, the newspaper receiver was the hub of the household, and family activities frequently revolved around the broadcast schedule.

The usual station schedule included something for everyone, from news and analysis to variety and humour, religious debate, sports, and children’s programming.

Journalism in Nigeria (FRCN) is concerned with the roles of educating, informing, entertaining, persuading, and advertising. Journalism in Nigeria uses both amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), and shortwave.

The station works hard in a variety of ways to assert itself; some focus on music, while others host discussions on specific political, economic, educational, social, cultural, and religious topics.

Journalism focuses on the audience with purchasing power.

Radio Nigeria’s role in economic development includes advertising, sponsored programmes, and public service announcements to strengthen its financial base, as well as educational programmes that promote products and improve professional training, thereby contributing effectively to Nigeria’s economic growth.
