ROLE OF NATIONAL BROADCASTING COMMISSION IN SUPERVISING BROADCAST STATIONS

Abstract

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is in charge of restructuring and regulating broadcasting, including ethical and professional standards. Since its beginning, the I NBC’s success has been judged or evaluated based on the performances of Nigerian radio and television stations.

This study examined the extent to which NBC has carried out its oversight role in the broadcast sector. The study surveyed three important areas of mass communication: print media, advertising agencies, and broadcast media. These individuals, who work in the same sector or profession, could evaluate NBC based on the station’s programming and conduct.

The questionnaire copies were distributed to 220 respondents using the purposive sampling method. To collect data for the study, five research topics were asked and then subdivided into simpler questions or items on the questionnaire.

The data generated were later collated in accordance with the research questions and used to address the study’s objectives. According to the study’s conclusions, the stations’ violations or crimes against the broadcast Code were caused by the NBC’s failure to take strong disciplinary procedures against offenders. Nonetheless, NBC is anticipated to evaluate and reshuffle their regulatory responsibilities.
