IMPACT OF TWITTER BAN ON ELECTRONIC MEDIA IN NIGERIA

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study
Electronically, the entire earth is connected. Streaming media, including radio, television, cable, satellite, and streaming, broadcast and receive millions of messages per day, providing a steady stream of information and pleasure. The landscape of news consumption is changing dramatically, with more people reading internet news than ever before.

Today’s viewers can get a “immediate helping” of the most recent news on the Internet, or on their mobile phones or social media pages (Stassen, J. (2010), cited in Ebbini, A. (2019).

This immediacy is not only conceivable, but expected, given the expanding power of computerised “smart” phones. According to survey statistics, people are increasingly going online to get their news rather than reading newspapers or watching network news (Maier, G. (2009); Ebbini, A. (2019).

New information, stories, and news may be communicated more widely and quickly than ever before because to the use of social media and new communication methods and technologies.

News is becoming pervasive in the digital era. The shift from broadcast media to digital media has fundamentally altered how information is reported and consumed. Although the general public is at the forefront of social media usage, television and radio stations are quickly catching up.

According to the 2009 Middleburg/SNCR Survey of Media in the Wired World, nearly 70% of television channels use social networking sites, and 48% use Twitter or other microblogging sites and tools.

More than 90% of journalists polled believed that new media and communications tools and technologies are increasingly being used to report news, locate story ideas and sources

and monitor feelings and discussions, demonstrating the importance of social media for television and radio stations. As a result, the significance of social media handles in media reporting through electronic media channels is demonstrated.

Statement of the Problem

On June 4, the Nigerian government announced the suspension of Twitter’s operations in the country. The announcement came two days after the social media corporation removed a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari, in which Buhari issued a thinly veiled threat to secessionist groups in the southeast, “to treat them in the language they understand.”

Since declaring the ban, the government has directed federal prosecutors to arrest anyone still using Twitter and ordered Internet service providers to block access to the platform.

After some initial misunderstanding about whether Twitter was still accessible, it appears that most Nigerians cannot access the platform as of mid-June.

The Twitter ban is only the latest example of a government exploiting its influence over the Internet and other digital technology to monitor, censor, and restrict its citizens.

However, while the federal government may justify the ban, the focus is on how the ban will affect media channels and stations that use Twitter to bring information to people in a fast-paced world where their audience has little time to sit in front of televisions and radios and instead relies on the internet.

One of the most astounding advantages of social media, particularly Twitter, is the ability to report on a story in real time, regardless of when the newscast airs.

A reporter can live-Tweet a story as it unfolds, providing news consumers with immediate access to information rather than having to wait for the nightly news. With the ban on Twitter in Nigeria, citizens now have quick access to information on all electronic media via the Twitter platform

which has a negative impact on media channels by reducing traffic to their website and limiting their ability to publish instant news on Twitter. As a result, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of Twitter’s prohibition on electronic media.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The primary goal of this study is to investigate the impact of a Twitter ban on electronic media. Specifically, the study aims to

To investigate the significance of social media sites in media reporting via electronic media.

To investigate the level of efficacy Twitter was to electronic media such as TV channels and radio stations before the ban.
To evaluate whether the Twitter ban will effect citizens’ easy access to information on television/radio stations’ social media pages.

To establish the extent to which Twitter’s prohibition may effect television channels’ speedy reporting, aside from nightly news.
