Chapter one

1.0 Introduction.

The expert system for human nutrition analysis is used to diagnose, control, and monitor human nutrition. The system evaluates the user’s physical attributes to establish their nutritional state and gives recommendations for meeting nutritional requirements and maintaining a balanced diet, resulting in the creation of a knowledge database containing the user’s nutritional status and eating habits.

The system provides challenges, alarms, and continually encourages users to utilise the program and improve their nutritional habits. The expert system is built with the C++ Expert System Shell, libraries (Laboratories 2012), and the C++ programming language, which runs as a Web Service on a Windows Web Server.

The system computes the BMI, or Body Mass Index, as shown in Eq. 1 (OMS 2012), the ideal weight and physical contexture, frame size (Rivas 1991), and nutritional data from (Bermudez 2012). This is the foundation for nutritional diagnosis in the proposed system.

This system will be created for all users as a tool to help them improve their eating habits and nutritional health. The idea is to include this program into their daily lives in order to help them develop and maintain healthier eating habits.

1.1 Background of the Study

An expert system, also known as an electronic diagnosis system, is a software hardware system that seeks to replicate the performance of one or more human experts, typically in a given issue area. It is a conventional application and/or subfield of artificial intelligence.

A broad number of ways can be employed to imitate the performance of the expert, but common to most or all of them

1) The establishment of a so-called “knowledgebase” which uses some knowledge representation formalism to capture the knowledge of the subject matter experts (SME).

2) information engineering is the process of acquiring information from SMEs and codifying it in accordance with the formalism. Expert systems may or may not include learning components, but a third common feature is that once constructed, the system is tested by placing it in the same real-world problem-solving environment as the human SME, either as an assistance to human workers or as a supplement to some information system.

As a leading application of computing and artificial intelligence, expert systems shares many similarities with general systems theory, operations research, business process reengineering, and a variety of areas in applied mathematics and management science.

Two examples of actual expert systems can demonstrate how they work. In one real-world scenario at a chemical refinery, a senior employee was ready to retire, and the firm was concerned that losing his experience in maintaining a fractionating tower would have a significant impact on plant operations.

A knowledge engineer was tasked with developing an expert system that replicated his skills, thereby preserving the organisation from losing its valuable knowledge asset.

An early commercial success and example of another typical application (a task that is often deemed too difficult for a person) was an expert system developed by DEC in the 1980s to quality check the configurations of their computers before to delivery. Expert systems were most popular in the 1980s, but interest waned as the AI Winter began.

Similarly, establishing one of these systems to serve as a store of a medical doctor’s expertise is just as important as developing another expert system. To that purpose, our project, Expert System for Human Nutrition Analysis, is essential.

It is also vital to effectively control the human health risk of nutrition, since malnutrition can lead to deformed health status. In the following chapter, the researcher will focus more on human nutrition and study of expert systems.

1.2 Statement of Research.

The dietary habits of modern Nigerian society are disturbing. Obesity rates have risen, making our country among the most obese in Africa. Poor nutritional habits cause six out of ten people to gain disproportionately more weight (CACIA 2012).

Obesity (BMI > 30) is prevalent at 59 percent (Rosero 2009). According to Euromonitor (2011), Nigeria would be one of the 10 countries with the highest obesity and malnutrition rates by 2020.

This reality necessitates raising public knowledge about the importance of dietary improvements and promoting preventative treatment. Many people, especially students, cannot afford to see a private nutritional expert (Morales 2012).

One issue in healthcare is a lack of access to frequent health monitoring. Health software provides less expensive solutions that reduce the physical relationship between physicians and patients while still providing monitoring solutions.

This approach can assist people distribute nutritional information, learn to measure their own nutritional status, and develop healthier eating habits to enhance their existing state (CIGA 2007; Salad 2003).

Health care facilities should be accessible to everyone at all times. However, some of those who should have access to these facilities live a long distance away. Furthermore, with the few accessible facilities, skilled medical professionals are always critical issues that require immediate attention.

In light of the foregoing, it would be critical to provide an expert system that will provide a complementary medical service, such as a human nutrition analysis system, where it can be accessed and used by the masses, as well as places where medical attention accessibility is a problem, as well as health care facilities where qualified experts are lacking, thus the topic, Expert System or electronic diagnosis system on nutrition.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of Research

The following elements serve as the goal and objectives of this study project.

1. Design an expert system that will be utilised to conduct human nutrition analyses.

2. A system that suggests to the user a typical and balanced nutritional diet.

3. Create a modern interactive diagnostic expert system to assist doctors and medical professionals with diagnostic operations.

1.4 Research Motivation

The researcher was motivated to research on this topic “expert system for human nutrition analysis” because of his encounter on the same issues and due to the difficulties I had, before I could get an analysis of my nutrition, I had to go a long distance to a nearby clinic and then diagnose, while I was being diagnosed by the doctor

I had a thought “what if I do such a system, one that can tell the human nutrition analysis an expert system” from then onwards I have sought for As a result, I want to meet my expectations through this research project.

1.5 The Significance of Research

If this planned prototype system is fully built, it will be extremely valuable in several fields, including:

a. It will assist in retaining the competence of an expert medical specialist in case of any scenario.

b. It can help academic growth.

c. It can be useful in many hospitals, both private and government, when the specialist is not on the seat.

d. It can also be employed in the lab for brief research tasks.

1.6 Scope of the project

The scope of work will include the following:

1. A dynamic database system that functions as a knowledge-based system.

2. A comprehensive model of an expert system to represent sample analysis.

3. The system is based on human nutrition analysis.

1.7 Limitations of the study

The primary limitation encountered throughout the implementation of this work was financial. This is one of several frustrations, including program problems during the modular assembly stage. Time was another key aspect that limited the scope of my research.

1.8 Definition of Terms and Variables

Diagnose: The identification of a patient’s ailment or disorder through physical examination, medical tests, or other procedures.

Medical: A physical examination by a doctor to evaluate health.

An expert is someone who has extensive knowledge, skill, training, or experience in a specific profession or activity, such as a medical expert.

Knowledge-based: An information system that stores a plethora of knowledge.

Artificial intelligence is the outcome of making machines too dense. The term “artificial intelligence” encompasses both expert systems and robots. The expert system technology was prompted by the reality that certain human domain experts postpone some remarkable expertise, which is lost when they die, leaving the next generation with little or nothing to inherit from their wonderful skill.

As a result, they need that a human’s expert knowledge in a realm of activity be stored in a computer so that the computer may replicate the expert’s reasoning in some fashion, making the same decisions or conclusions as the expert himself and effectively replacing him.

Expert System: According to Daniel L. Stotink and his colleagues in the book “Computer and Applications: An Introduction to Data Processing,” expert systems are also knowledge-based systems. It is a complicated software (program) that mimics the mental processes and decision-making patterns of human specialists in a specific topic.

The expert system is an offspring of artificial intelligence (AI) and is generated utilising A1 programming techniques. It is created when the expert knowledge of a human being in a sphere of activity is stored in the computer.

As a result, the computer repository of this expert information, in some way, reaching the same conclusion as the expect himself and efficiently replacing him, produces an expert system or knowledge-based system.

Nutrition is the set of mechanisms by which the living body obtains and uses the food ingredients required for growth, maintenance of function, and repair of component parts.

Nutrition is the science of food and its relationship to health, with an emphasis on the role of food factors (nutrients) in body growth, development, and maintenance.

Protein is a body building material for all body parts, including muscle, brain, blood, skin, hair, nails, bones, and body fluids. It is composed of amino acids and is primarily derived from animal sources such as milk, eggs, meat, fish, and cheese, as well as plant sources such as pulses, cereals, beans, nuts, soya beans, and so on.

Health refers to a live organism’s functional or metabolic efficiency. Humans have the ability to adapt and self-manage when confronted with physical, mental, or social problems.

Diet: In nutrition, diet refers to the total amount of food taken by a human or other organism, particularly balanced food that contains all of the nutrients required by the body system.
