Influence Of Demographic Factors On Teachers Recruitment And Retaining

Abstract
When schools are formed, qualified teachers must be in place to prepare pupils to acquire knowledge and applicable skills for the workplace. Teachers, consequently, must be recruited.

This report examined the recruitment and retention of teachers. It has been observed that some government entities are in charge of recruitment but not retention.

Proposals to retain teachers were presented. It was also highlighted that, despite these ideas, several concerns such as non-promotion when due, a lack of accommodations, among others, enhanced school organisational aspects, and insufficient pre-service preparatory institutions for teachers remain.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether demographic characteristics (gender, age, and education level) have a substantial impact on instructors’ motivation to remain in the teaching profession. Three null hypotheses were developed to guide the study. The study used the ex post facto research design.

The sample size was fifty teachers. Inferential statistics were used to analyse the data, namely the independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).

The weight of statistical evidence demonstrated that demographic characteristics have a considerable impact on teachers’ willingness to continue in the teaching profession in Rivers State, Nigeria.

Based on the findings, it was suggested that employers of teachers add retention packages such as the ‘Golden Handcuff’ to the existing ones in order to account for demographic considerations. It also proposed increasing teacher training programs and controlling teacher migration.
