The Misuse Of The English Articles In Selected Nigerian Newspapers
ABSTRACT
The English article system is a complex system, but it is essential for English speakers. The articles serve various key tasks and considerably benefit the art of communication. Despite the undeniable necessity of English articles, Nigerian publications abuse them to an extreme degree. Newspapers are incredibly useful learning resources for students and the general public.
However, Nigerian publications do not meet the high standards that are required of them. Despite this anomaly, research on the usage of English articles by Nigerian publications has been especially scarce. The goal is to examine the usage of English articles by Nigerian newspapers. The study aims to answer research topics such as:
How do print media stray from recognised grammatical uses of articles?
To what extent are the articles being misused?
To what extent does the overuse of English articles impede effective communication in Nigerian newspapers?
To what extent does overuse of English articles disrupt the link between nouns and articles? What are the reasons behind the incorrect use of English articles by Nigerian newspapers?
In order to answer these questions, the researcher conducted extensive library study. The study’s population consists of all Nigerian newspapers, and the researcher selected six editions from three national newspapers, two of each.
The data study revealed that faults in the abuse of English articles are common in Nigerian publications, which impedes effective communication. These findings suggest that newspapers should hire stronger writers and editors. The paper ends with suggestions for future research.
