Empowering The Widows Of The Catholic Diocese Of Nsukka To Cope With Their Problems Through Non- Formal Education Programmes

ABSTRACT

The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka’s widow groups were formed to provide a venue for widows to connect and discuss mutual interests. These widows are typically helped through welfare assistance packages that include money, food, clothing, and shelter. There are numerous challenges linked with widowhood, which may lead many widows to believe they are helpless.

Instead of waiting for the world to save them, widows must be empowered to realise their full potential and express their individuality. How could these widows be equipped to deal with their problems?

This may be possible through education. Women who engage in a variety of activities require a non-formal education. This study thus, aimed at studying how the widows of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka may be empowered to cope with their challenges through non-formal education courses.

The study provided five research questions and one null hypothesis, with a survey as the research design. The population consisted of one thousand and two widows who are registered members of the St. Rita’s Widows Association from the twenty-three parishes where the association operates, with three hundred and four serving as the sample.

The study used simple random sampling. The sample was drawn from one-third of the total population. A standardised questionnaire was employed to gather information from the widows. C

opies of the questionnaire were distributed, with data collected and evaluated. Simple percentage, weighted mean, and ANOVA statistics were employed to examine and test the research questions and hypotheses, respectively.

The findings revealed, among other things, that the majority of the widows expressed an interest in obtaining educational qualifications. There was broad consensus that widows would be empowered through income-generating skills training, reproductive health, literacy, family life education, and legal education programs.

The widows’ coping mechanisms differed significantly depending on their educational qualifications. Consequently, the null hypothesis is rejected.

Based on the findings, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka should develop skills acquisition centres for their widows at important parishes, incorporating all parts of non-formal education courses described in this study.
