ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF SOLID WASTE LANDFILLING
Abstract
Gas and leachate creation is an unavoidable result of solid waste disposal in landfills, which is caused primarily by microbial decomposition, climatic circumstances, refuse characteristics, and landfill activities.
The migration of gas and leachate away from landfill limits and their release into the surrounding environment are major environmental concerns for both existing and new landfills.
Fires and explosions, vegetation damage, unpleasant odours, landfill settling, ground water pollution, air pollution, and global warming are among the concerns raised, in addition to potential health risks.
This study provides an overview of gas and leachate generation mechanisms in landfills, as well as their negative environmental implications, and discusses control approaches for eliminating or reducing these impacts.
