JOB PROSPECTS FOR LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE GRADUATES IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to look into the job prospects for library and information science graduates in Nigeria. To achieve this goal, the following precise objectives were established:

to determine the views of Nigerian librarians on the value of a library and information science degree, as well as to identify the barriers to engaging in work opportunities among Nigerian librarians.

Job prospects in librarianship have been noticed, with few Nigerian university graduates applying to study library and information science (LIS) in the first place, but only as a last resort.

This condition is detrimental to the future of the LIS profession in Nigeria. An investigation revealed that most Nigerian school libraries are filled with foreign publications that are not only out of date but also alien to Nigerian pupils’ experiences and backgrounds.

The survey research design was used, with the career choice Influence Questionnaire serving as the primary data gathering instrument. A total of 57 graduates answered to the questionnaires that were reviewed. A total of fifty (50) related questions were used as data gathering tools.

The study is significant because it will highlight the characteristics that employees see as increasing job happiness, resulting in enhanced employee performance within their organisational setting. Companies and organisations’ management will benefit from the findings in terms of raising worker morale and increasing employee job satisfaction.

Based on the findings, it is recommended that all questionnaires distributed be collected with maximum responses, so that one can determine the degree of choice in librarianship aims for the sexes, what motivated their choice in librarianship is conformity with their talent, abilities, aptitudes, and general inclination, as well as whether they will continue with librarianship as a profession and where they would like to work as a librarian.

Chapter 1: Introduction

A job prospect is a work opportunity with a high likelihood of success in the future; it is a set of strategies used by an organisation to encourage its employees to achieve the organization’s goals through consensus.

Job prospects in librarianship have been noticed, with few Nigerian university graduates applying to study library and information science (LIS) in the first place, but only as a last resort. This condition is detrimental to the future of the LIS profession in Nigeria.

Job satisfaction is a complex and comprehensive notion that varies according to individual interpretations. It is more of an attitude, or interior state. School libraries are extremely important in primary and secondary education. They are established and maintained to assist the school’s educational operations.

As a preface to the other sections of this study, this chapter will describe the context in which this study was launched, the statement of problems that led to this study, and the study’s aim and objectives. Other considerations include the study’s significance, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, study limitations, and technical term definitions.

1.2 Background of the Study

The library is a repository of information and knowledge for decision making, business, effective planning, communication, research, and advancement, and we cannot function without it.

The developed countries of the globe recognise the importance of information. Nigeria, being a developing country, has only recently recognised the importance of libraries as information storage facilities, and as a result, there are now a variety of library types. Public, national, and school libraries Academic and special libraries in Nigeria provide information services to their respective user communities.

Libraries and librarianship have progressed in Nigeria over time, but they have yet to establish themselves as legitimate institutions and possessions in the country.

Despite the abundance of rice knowledge and information resources available in libraries, librarianship is one of the least desirable professions in Nigeria (Okoro, 2009).

Generally speaking, a strong academic foundation leads to a successful job. Lawyers, doctors, engineers, and accountants have always been held in high favour because they all require a solid academic background.

However, there are also additional professions that require advance education but seldom earn adequate respect. Librarianship is a career dedicated to serving the general public by providing timely and correct information, so contributing to the advancement of society.

According to Igbinosa (2007), people, particularly students, are reluctant to seek a job as a librarian. They are unaware that librarians are the unsung heroes who drive the success of students, researchers, medical doctors, and so on.

Graduates in library and information science are responsible for service and operations. The library has been recognised as an important profession.

Librarians get together and communicate with the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), which has served as a link for many years through its Annual General Meeting, conference, seminars, workshops, and other events at the national and state levels.

Despite the efforts of the Nigerian Library Association and the services of libraries and librarians, graduates have not achieved the same level of development as other graduates in fields such as medicine, engineering, law, and nursing.

Both professional librarians and student librarians feel inferior, which prevents them from standing up and defending themselves and their profession in front of others.

Library and information science was not recognised until (1995), when it was recognised by the federal government of Nigeria by the promulgation of Nigerians (Registration, etc. Council of Nigeria Decree 12, 1995. Indeed, this can be applicable to career chances after studying library and information science for a set number of years; this is especially true if our decision to work in library and information science due to our abilities, performances, and comprehensiveness. As is, the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English defends job opportunities. As a job opportunity with a high probability of future success.

An employee must consequently be driven to do his task; occupations are designed for people, not jobs for people. Man labours to satisfy his bodily, social, and psychological requirements.

The motivation itself is determined by elements such as employment opportunities, which, according to Longman Dictionary English, are a collection of the basis of consensus, cooperation, and consensus to inspire her employees to achieve the goals of such organisation.

As a result, in Nigeria, where the research was done, the activities included learning about the job prospects for Library and Information Science graduates.

1.3 Statement of Problems

An investigation revealed that most Nigerian school libraries are filled with foreign publications that are not only out of date but also alien to Nigerian pupils’ experiences and backgrounds.

Furthermore, literature appears to show that students’ poor academic performance in schools is linked to the low standards evident in school libraries.

However, it is important to note that the researcher is aware that factors such as clear lines of communication, an adequate reward system, and promotional opportunities can encourage or discourage both positive and negative work outcomes, which, if not implemented properly, can lead to employee turnover.

1.4 Goals and Objectives of Study

The study’s goal is to investigate the job prospects for Library and Information Science graduates in Nigeria. To achieve this goal, the particular objectives listed below were established:

The study aims to establish the value of a library and information science degree among Nigerian librarians, as well as the job recruitment methods they use.

The study aims to identify barriers to career chances for Nigerian librarians, assess the availability of job opportunities, and provide solutions to support librarians’ side business activities.

1.5 Research Questions.

The study developed research questions to determine the above-stated aims. The specific research questions for the project are listed below:

Are you satisfied with your job?

Is your choice of librarianship in line with your skills, abilities, aptitude, and general interests?

Do you intend to continue working as a librarian?

Do librarians in Nigeria have career opportunities?

What are the opinions of Nigerian librarians on the value of a library and information science degree?

What types of job recruitment activities do librarians in Nigeria engage in?

What are the challenges that Nigerian librarians face when it comes to side business?

What strategies can be used to increase librarians’ engagement in their jobs?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

In order to achieve the goal of this study, the following generalised statements have been prepared to guide and aid in collecting the results of the experiment to be done. For the sake of this study, the null hypothesis will be denoted by H0, whereas the alternative hypothesis will be represented by H1.

Hypothesis One.

H0: There is no notable issue hindering job procurement among Library and Information Science Graduates in Nigeria.

H1: There is a key barrier that inhibits job procurement among Library and Information Science graduates in Nigeria.

1.7 Significance of the Study

The study is significant because it will highlight the characteristics that employees see as increasing job happiness, resulting in enhanced employee performance within their organisational setting. Companies and organisations’ management will benefit from the findings in terms of raising worker morale and increasing employee job satisfaction.

An employee who succeeds in his or her job and has his or her needs addressed at work is a happy employee who will strive for excellence. Furthermore, the study will propose policies and measures for reducing organisational correlates of job discontent.

This study will be extremely beneficial to other researchers who want to learn more about it, and it may also be utilised by non-researchers to expand on their own research. This study adds to our understanding and may serve as a model for future research.

1.8 Scope of Study

The research focusses on the job prospects for library and information science graduates in Nigeria.

1.9 Limitations of the Study

Several factors impeded the completion of this research, including the following:

Time Constraint: Due to the school academic calendar, the time window allocated to complete this study was extremely short, and it was carried out under pressure, causing the researcher to overlook several critical features.

Establishment Policies: Establishment policies created a significant challenge because most employees are unwilling to release information required for this project.

There was a lot of information required from the staff of this establishment to improve the study, which took a long time to disclose or was not released at all for security reasons, therefore the scope was narrowed.

The availability of research material is a significant limitation to the breadth of the investigation.

Frequent power outages prompted the researcher to spend extra money on gasoline to ensure sustainable power.

Financial constraints: Insufficient funds tend to restrict the researcher’s efficiency in accessing relevant materials, literature, or information, as well as in data collecting (internet, questionnaire, interview).

1.10 Definition of Terms.

Job: A job is a piece of work completed for a set fee.

Library: A library is a repository of information, and information is critical in many aspects of life, including business, decision making, and growth.

work Prospects: This is a work opportunity with a high likelihood of success in the future; it is a collection of strategies used by an organisation to encourage its personnel to achieve the organization’s goals through consensus.

Chapter Two: Literature Review and Introduction

This chapter’s major topic is a review of pertinent literature. A literature review examines theoretical and methodological contributions to a specific subject, as well as the level of knowledge at the time of publication.

It gives information on the state of the art in regards to the topic you’re writing about. It explores the body of literature on the specified topic. This study’s literature examination includes the following:
