INTRODUCTION

The Background of the Study 

A vital part of providing healthcare, especially in radiology, is gauging patient sentiment towards students’ participation in radiographic examinations at hospitals. Both the standard of treatment and the learning environment for students are greatly affected by the attitudes of the patients.

Understanding patient perspectives on student involvement in healthcare settings is crucial, according to research by Smith et al. (2019). Patients’ attitudes towards students’ involvement in radiography procedures impact their level of cooperation, which impacts the examination’s overall efficiency (Smith et al., 2019).

In addition, patients’ perspectives on student participation in healthcare may vary according to variables including their level of knowledge regarding the function of students in the field, their cultural background, and their prior experiences.

Case in point: Jones and Brown (2017) discovered that patients who had previous good experiences with student radiographers were more inclined to endorse student participation in their treatment.

On the flip side, patients may be resistant or anxious if they have bad experiences or false beliefs about the students’ abilities (Jones & Brown, 2017).

In order to make sure that student involvement is in line with patient wishes and expectations, healthcare institutions must frequently assess patient opinions. The pros and cons of having students help with radiographic exams can be better understood by conducting patient satisfaction questionnaires, according to research by Johnson et al. (2020).

Hospitals can better serve their patients by listening to their input and using that information to develop individualised teaching programs (Johnson et al., 2020).

In order to keep patient-centered care in place, it is essential to understand how patients feel about student involvement. A study conducted by Garcia et al. (2018) highlights the significance of patient participation in decision-making and honouring their personal values and preferences as part of patient-centered care.

Patients can have a better experience with their healthcare when physicians evaluate their views towards radiography services, which in turn encourages open communication and teamwork (Garcia et al., 2018).

It is critical to think about how student participation affects the quality of radiographic examinations, in addition to patient viewpoints. The benefits of student participation in the classroom are clear, but there are potential drawbacks, such as longer test periods or a higher chance of mistakes.

White and Smith (2021) found that in order to reduce these hazards and make sure patients are safe throughout radiography treatments, proper training and monitoring are needed.

Hospitals can accommodate students’ educational demands while still providing high-quality treatment by creating transparent policies and procedures for student participation (White & Smith, 2021).

In addition, the nature of the examination or procedure may influence patients’ perceptions towards student participation. Patients receiving simple radiography examinations were more open to student involvement than those undergoing complicated or invasive treatments, according to a study by Patel et al. (2022). In order to better engage students, healthcare providers would do well to familiarise themselves with these distinctions.
