EFFECTS OF TRUANCY ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ONDO WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ONDO STATE
ABSTRACT
Students in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State in particular were the focus of this research, which aims to examine the impact of truancy on their academic performance and the causes of truancy in order to devise an effective solution to the problem of truancy.
I began this project by conducting a literature research on the issue of the impact of absenteeism on the academic performance of pupils in order to ensure that this project would be completed on schedule. In order to conduct an effective examination into these issues, the author made sure to highlight the methods utilized to collect data, one of which is the usage of student surveys.
The researcher spent a lot of time putting together a list of questions. Students were asked to complete a 20-item survey based on the research topics. Some of the students’ issues were uncovered through the analysis of the data, which serves as substance for acceptance. The researcher’s findings have resulted in a few policy changes that should help to improve the situation.

THE STUDY’S ORIGINS AND CONTEXT
Giedugba (1996) found that a significant number of students in educational institutions were absent. In order to participate in activities that are not under the authority of either their parents or the school, they take time off from school. To defend one’s or one’s interests. Parents and teachers are duped into thinking that the truant is being a good student by the truant’s behavior. Truancy is more of a sign of our school system’s failings than it is of a person’s criminal proclivity.
In this system, individuality is of little consequence. Numerous behaviors and tactics are employed by students who refuse to attend school. Students in Ondo State’s Ondo West Local Government Area, for example, are known to go to the bust to hunt for snails, shoot rabbits, and harvest fruits, as well as hide out in the streets and wander aimlessly.
Many of the students make their way to the rivers to swim, while others work in small businesses to earn extra money to buy food, minerals, ice creams, and other necessities. Some students even have a secret love that forces them to leave school grounds on a regular basis.
Those pupils who are unable to tolerate or remain in a corrective setting at home or in school will have to seek out other places in order to relax and satisfy their curiosity. Such students are almost certain to skip class. It is also possible to describe a truant as someone who skips school for no legitimate cause.
This person is frequently absent from school because he or she prefers to spend time elsewhere. Truancy is a crime committed by students at educational institutions. As observed by Bozumah (2002)’s research, truancy is more common in secondary schools than in colleges and universities.
EXPLAINING THE PROBLEM IN DETAIL
Even though school absences are a severe threat to student learning, few steps have been taken by the education system as a whole to address the issue. School youngsters are becoming more and more involved in social vices, such as theft, smoking, and rioting, according to this issue.
This is due to the fact that most homes no longer perform their traditional role of raising and bringing up a child in an upright manner. It’s because many parents are so occupied with work and travel that they don’t have time to keep an eye on their children’s actions and behavior..
It’s difficult to learn at many schools because of a lack of motivation. In part, this is owing to the fact that schools are overcrowding, understaffed, and without adequate resources. Truancy and other social vices occur as a result of students’ inability to cope with the unfavorable settings in which they are educated.
Children from single-parent families are more likely to be absent from school because they are able to stay at their mother’s house and pretend to be going to their father’s house, allowing them to join a bad peer group without their parents’ knowledge, as both parents think they are in the other’s house.
SUBJECT MATTER AND AIM OF THE EXAMINATION
The study’s goal is to investigate;
i. The impact of absenteeism on secondary school pupils’ academic achievement.
Students who are regularly absent from school can be prevented by the efforts of their families, schools, communities, and society as a whole.
Suggestions for techniques and means to abolish these bad practices in secondary schools are also welcome.
QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH (1.4)
a. Why do secondary school pupils engage in absenteeism?
For secondary school pupils, how does truancy affect their academic performance and grades?
How can parents, schools, and the surrounding environment work together to avoid absenteeism in high school?
d. What strategies and tactics could be used to reduce the number of students who skip school?
STUDY IMPORTANCE IS 1.5
Parents in Ondo West Local Government Area will benefit greatly from the study, which will help them understand the consequences of their children’s absenteeism in secondary school. Ondo West Local Government Area in Ondo State hopes that this study will help the secondary school administration to reap the various school students and enhance their schools’ reputations. Finally, it is expected to help the local government authorities to recognize truancy among secondary school students.
1 The Study’s Purpose and Range of Inquiry
The investigation is limited to the phenomena of the study of truancy among secondary school students’ academic performance in a few selected secondary schools in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, which is expected to include only secondary schools.
