A CASE STUDY OF A PRIMARY SCHOOL IN IBADAN NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT’S POOR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS.

A CASE STUDY OF A PRIMARY SCHOOL IN IBADAN NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT’S POOR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS.

INTRODUCTION

Mathematics is a subject that has a significant impact on almost every aspect of human life. Numbers serve as the foundation for man’s social, financial, logical, and mechanical aspects. Mathematics is a fundamental requirement for success in disciplines such as engineering and accounting. As a result, the subject is crucial.

The continued poor performance of students in the subject is now a national concern, requiring parents, teachers, and educational planners to find solutions to this downward trend in mathematics performance. As a result, the rationale for conducting this study is both pertinent and intriguing.

The poor performance of students in the first school leaving certificate examination demonstrated that much work remains to be done to reverse this situation. Furthermore, the rate at which students are afraid of the subject is a situation that, if not handled properly, can cause more harm and problems for students. Poor performance in mathematics has been blamed on the subject’s difficulty over the years. It has been discovered that students’ attitudes toward the study or learning of mathematics reflect anxiety and fear.

As a result, the purpose of this study was to identify some of the factors that contribute to students’ poor performance in primary school mathematics in Ibadan North West Local Government. Because of the poor performance of students in mathematics, it is necessary to examine some of the factors that contribute to this performance. Because mathematics is such an important subject in human life, it would be better to test and see how society can help improve the quality of mathematics teaching and learning in our primary schools.

Statement of the Issue

In an ideal world, schools would achieve their primary goals of teaching and learning by improving students’ academic performance. Before entering secondary school, students were expected to have basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Unfortunately, this is not the case in the Ibadan North West Local Government Area, where many students are illiterate. Many students are unable to write or perform basic mathematical operations on their own. Numerous studies have been conducted to determine the causes of poor mathematics performance;

however, the problem remains unresolved to this day. On this note, the researcher thought it was important to look into the causes of poor mathematics performance among students in the Ibadan North West Local Government Area.

The study’s objective

The primary goal of this study was to investigate some of the issues that contribute to students’ poor performance in primary school mathematics. This study was specifically intended and designed to:

evaluate the impact of instructional materials on student performance
Investigate the impact of parents’ socioeconomic status on students’ academic performance in mathematics.
Review of the literature

To conduct this research effectively, the student will read relevant literature under the following headings.

Students’ attitudes in the classroom
Teachers’ qualifications The use of teaching aids (Instructional Materials)
Parents’ Role
The Principal and his Administration
Influence of the Environment
Government/Political Aspects
Socioeconomic status of parents (SES and Pupils Performance)
Methodology

Design of Research

A descriptive survey and quasi-experimental research designs will be used in the study. The descriptive survey design was chosen because the study sought to describe the state of affairs of all observed phenomena using empirical data, whereas the quasi- experimental design was chosen because the study also sought to investigate whether there is a difference in academic performance of private and public primary school pupils in mathematics.

Data Collection Instrument(s)

A set of questionnaires designed by the researcher will be used to collect data, and a multiple choice mathematics achievement test (MAT) designed by the researcher will also be used to collect data for the study.

Data Analysis Technique

The collected data will be analyzed in order to provide answers to the research questions that will guide the study. The collected data will be coded and scored, and descriptive statistical techniques such as simple percentage and arithmetic mean will be used to analyze the data.
