A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF BOARDING AND DAY STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN EDUCATION

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF BOARDING AND DAY STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN EDUCATION

CHAPTER ONE

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

The arrival of white men brings about a formal and organized system of education, but Nigeria had its own indigenous system of education prior to this. This system was primarily traditional and informal, but it has since been replaced with the arrival of Europeans in the country.

There is an organized system in place that allows students to live on school grounds under the supervision of school personnel. This system can be traced back to the ancient Greek educational system in Anthems, where young boys were sent to institutes to be trained as brave soldiers (Ehigie, 2000).

This is also true of Nigeria’s traditional indigenous educational system. In our traditional society, apprentices were sent to stay with their apprenticeship in order to be close to their source of knowledge (Fafunwa, 1974). Nonetheless, the origins of boarding houses in formal education in Nigeria can be traced back to the early 1840s, when Christian missionary activities began in Nigeria.

It was then used to schedule converts, particularly young people from the larger society, in order for missionaries to instill in them Christian values as well as western values and culture. The idea was that if the students lived in a mission-controlled environment, it would be easier to indoctrinate and force them to attend school on a regular basis. Aghenta (1983) identifies the boarding house systems’ objectives as follows:

1. Providing opportunities for students from diverse social and economic backgrounds to live together and share common problems and interests.

2. Providing opportunities for students to gain independence and a sense of responsibility.

3. The provision of a stable environment with regular sleep, a planned diet, and a conducive environment that encourages serious academic work.

4. The provision of opportunities for students to form genuine friendships in their lives.

5. The provision of boarding facilities for students whose parents live a long distance away from the school.

The boarding system, on the other hand, is optional for those who can afford it. Others may prefer to attend school from home because they cannot afford to travel. There has also been debate about whether the boarding school is truly necessary. The question now is whether the cost of attending a boarding school is proportional to a student’s academic excellence, as opposed to today’s school system. As a result, the researcher approached this project with this idea in mind.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The issue of whether or not more boarding facilities should be provided for our secondary school has recently captured the attention of the government, educators, and parents alike. Both the federal and state governments have found it increasingly difficult to provide enough secondary school for the ever-increasing student population.

This is an issue that no responsible government can afford to ignore, even though more secondary schools have recently been established throughout the country by both the government and private individuals; for example, in Edo State, we now have more than free government-owned secondary schools and a large number of private secondary schools.

However, some Nigerians have begun to question the wisdom of spending the government’s limited resources on boarding facilities when those same resources could be used to build more schools. Different people have different perspectives on the academic performance of day and boarding students. The problem statements are derived from the preceding assertions:

1. Which of the two groups, boarding students or day students, has the better academic performance?

2. Is there any correlation between the academic performance of female day students and boarders?

3. What effect does the home and school environment have on students’ academic performance?

QUESTION FOR RESEARCH

For this study, the following research question is stated:

1. Is there a difference in academic performance in education between day students and boarding students?

2. Is there a difference in academic performance between females from wealthy families and those from poor families?

3. Does the environment have a positive or negative impact on students’ academic performance?

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

1. Determine whether there is a difference in academic performance between boarding and day students among students at Idea College Secondary School.

2. To determine whether there is a difference in academic performance between students whose parents are wealthy and those whose parents are poor.

3. Determine whether the environment or atmosphere has any effect on the academic performance of both day and boarding students.

THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

The actions and decisions of government educational administrators This will help in the development of educational policies and the organization of daily school activities. The researcher anticipates that this study will be beneficial to them.

It is also hoped that parents will find this study useful in making decisions about their child or children. They will thus know whether the money spent on boarding houses for their child or wards was justified.

Students at universities, colleges of education, and polytechnics will benefit from this research as they plan to improve their academic performance by studying harder.

THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The study is restricted to a single secondary school. A case study of three selected secondary schools in Benin City’s Oredo Local Government Area. The sample includes both boarding and day students at the school.

PRIMARY ASSUMPTION

It is assumed that boarding students outperform day students in terms of academic performance.

Boarding students, it is assumed, are more exposed to organized living and out-of-school activities than day students.

Because of distractions from parents and relatives, it is assumed that there is no conducive atmosphere or environment for effective study at home.

DESCRIPTION OF TERMS

Day students: These are students who come to school from their homes.

Boarding students are students who live in a boarding house within the school.

Academic performance: This refers to the percentage scores obtained by a student in any of the school’s class examinations.

The environment is the setting in which man lives and to which he reacts and attaches meaning. However, in the project, it is viewed as a location where students can gain knowledge as well as their various homes.
