Tourism is defined as travel for recreational, leisure, religious, or family business objectives, which is typically of short duration. Tourism is seen as an essential activity for nations because to its direct impact on the social, cultural, educational, and economic sectors of national communities, as well as their international relations.
According to the third edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, tourism is defined as the commercial organisation and operation of vacations and excursions to places of interest.
Tourism is described as a short-term movement of individuals to locations some distance from their usual place of residence in order to engage in enjoyable activities. (Swarbrook, Horner, 2007).
When a person leaves his home town for another location inside the same country, he is considered a domestic tourist. But if he passes his country’s borders, he becomes an international tourist.
People who visit Minna in December to attend the Akpazuma festival are domestic tourists, but those who travel from other countries to see the Gurara waterfalls are international visitors.
However, tourism is quickly becoming one of the most functional sectors in the world. It has a significant impact on nations by creating job opportunities, expanding infrastructure, and providing a highly rich source of cash and revenue.
It is essential because it employs a large proportion of a country’s people, including doctors, dancers, engineers, labourers, and entertainers. For example, in Britain, nearly three million people work in tourism, while in Spain and Italy, the figures are greater than 70%.
This explains why both countries are world leaders in the tourism sector. Nigeria offers a large number of parks, holiday resorts, and hotels. It is projected that Nigeria’s tourist industry can employ 100,000 people. This would relieve a vast number of unemployed people of their idleness and joblessness.
Tourism contributes to a nation’s infrastructure development. It offers facilities such as a good transportation and communication network, affordable and comfortable accommodations, critical infrastructure, and superstructures.
As a result, several countries have incorporated tourism into their national plans in order to improve the economic level of their physical environments and people’s social connection.
Tourism also has a significant impact on environmental improvement, hotel development, and related businesses. It also provides benefits such as the provision of critical infrastructure, energy, road development, and portable water and sewage disposal systems.
As a significant source of income and revenue, tourism has become one of the most important sources of foreign exchange and balance of payments for many tourism-oriented countries. This is shown by Britain’s largest export, tourism, which is one of the fastest expanding sectors of international trade.
Tourism, in addition to providing foreign exchange revenues, has the potential to promote national unity and mutual understanding through local and international travel.
If tourism is adequately developed in Nigeria, it will promote peace and unity, and many Nigerians will be able to visit various other states and tribes. This will end wars and lower tribalism and religious tensions.
As a result, it fosters a feeling of unity and love among citizens of diverse nations, as well as the formation and maintenance of positive relationships and a united community.
