CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background Of Study
Corruption is defined as dishonesty, lack of integrity, or the misuse of public office for private gain. The Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act of 2000 defines corruption as “including bribery, fraud, and related offenses” (hereinafter referred to as the Act). Today, both commercial and public sector businesses across the nation have been affected by this. Some of our past leaders amassed riches through unethical practices, such as using their positions for personal gain, accepting bribes, mismanaging funds, and inflating contract prices. Motivation and effective leadership constitute one of the most effective methods for eradicating corruption in our society today. In today’s society, it is well-established that a leader who cares for the needs of the people can accomplish effective and efficient results at all levels of endeavor. A good leader is capable of guiding and influencing the task-related actions of an organization’s members. A good leader frowns upon attitudes of indifference toward work and responsibilities at all levels of responsibility, as well as corruption at any level that may emerge during the task execution process. This research is based on the assumption that corruption was prevalent in the CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION between 1991 and 2000. Its primary objective is to identify frequent problems observed during the course of the investigation.
1.2 Statement of problem
It was determined that the CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION has experienced a setback due to incompetent management in positions of responsibility, as well as a lack of motivation and effective leadership abilities, which has led to multiple cases of corruption, bribery, and mismanagement of Commission money. Mr. Ahmed Almustapha oversaw the implementation of a new management team in 2001. A group with exceptional motivation. Leadership and corruption at all levels of government prompted the formation of the Commission.
1.3 Objective of study
The purpose of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of motivation, leadership, and corruption in the corporate affairs commission. Specifically, this study intends to:
Examining if a lack of leadership ability contributed to the CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION’s high level of corrupt behaviors.
Examining if sufficient incentive and effective leadership skills can remove corruption at all levels of the CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION.
Examining if the supply of basic means of subsistence and a comprehensive welfare package will increase productivity.
1.4 Research Hypotheses
The validity of the following hypotheses will be examined in chapter four of this research letter:
H01: The high level of corrupt behaviors at the CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION was not due to poor leadership.
H02: Appropriate motivation and effective leadership methods cannot eradicate corruption at all levels of the CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION.
H03: The provision of basic means of subsistence and a comprehensive welfare package will not increase productivity.
1.5 Significance Of Study
This project’s objective is to analyze motivation and effective leadership strategies for eradicating corruption in government parastatals in Nigeria, using the CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION as a case study. The objective is to draw attention to how motivation and good leadership teams could remove corruption in the day-to-day operations of the general public, showing a corruption-free working environment with timely and efficient service delivery. During the course of this analysis, it was observed that the management instituted training and development programs for personnel in order to improve the Commission’s Anti-Corruption Crusade at all levels of operation.
This study will contribute to the current literature on this topic and serve as a resource for scholars, researchers, and students who may do additional research on this topic or a comparable one in the future.
1.6 Scope Of Study
This study investigates motivation, leadership, and corruption in the corporate affairs commission seriously ( C.A.C). The study will also investigate if the CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION’s high degree of corrupt behaviors was caused by weak leadership. In addition, the study will investigate if proper motivation and effective leadership strategies may remove corruption at all levels of the CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION. And whether the supply of basic means of subsistence and a comprehensive welfare package will increase productivity. Therefore, the personnel of CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION, Abuja, would act as participants in this study.
1.7 Limitation Of Study
During the course of the investigation, the researchers were hindered by insufficient funds, insufficient resources, and a lack of time.
1.8 Definition Of Terms
Motivation is what explains why individuals or animals commence, maintain, or cease a certain behavior at a given time. It is usually accepted that motivational states are factors acting within the agent that induce a disposition to participate in goal-directed activity. It is commonly believed that multiple mental states compete with one another to dictate behavior, with only the strongest state dictating actions.
Leadership is both a field of study and a practical talent that encompasses the capacity of an individual, group, or organization to “lead,” influence, or direct other individuals, teams, or entire organizations.
Corruption: According to the World Bank, corruption is a form of dishonesty or a criminal crime that is committed by a person or organization in a position of authority in order to collect illegal benefits or abuse power for private gain.
Corporate Affairs Commission: The Corporate Affairs Commission is a Nigerian government agency responsible for the regulation and administration of Nigerian corporations. With the passage of the Companies and Allied Matters Act in 1990, it came into effect. It is led by a Chairman and aided by the Registrar General/ Chief Executive Officer.
