Education pervades our lives, and as the foundation of our society, its significance cannot be overstated.
Student admission plays an important role in the activities of every school since without students, there is no school. Due to its speed, delay, and integrity, an inefficient admission procedure limits the number of efficient students in the school.
Because of the multiple advantages of digitalization, applying for admission is now computerised, with prospective students using the web to apply. However, the processes for admitting a student who has applied are not digitalized.
Those applications are manually reviewed rather than digitally. The online admission system will not only accept applications from prospective students, but will also screen them digitally and manually.
The human screen rules will be automated, allowing digital screening of applications to determine whether or not each candidate meets the criterion.
This research system, ONLINE STUDENT ADMISSION SYSTEM FOR FEDERAL UNITY COLLEGES, employs the Dynamic System Development Methodology (DSDM) and is built with VB.net (HTML and ASP.net) and SQL as interface and database design languages, respectively.
The IDEs utilised are Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server Management Studio 2008. The visuals were created using Adobe Photoshop CS5.

1.0 INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY
The pursuit of education and knowledge has gained traction, thanks to technological advancements. It has boosted education; from online admission application systems to online lecturing systems, technology can be found in every area of education.
Education pervades our lives and serves as the cornerstone of our society. Education stimulates our minds and transforms inquisitive minds into intellectuals. Higher education raises the mind to the next level, allowing us to gain a better grasp of the world around us.
Application for admission is a process that all prospective students must go through. Despite the digitalized student application procedure, this process has been manned by hand.
This study aims to automate the admissions process by automating and simulating the normal admission rules of federal unity institutions.
Admission is the process of being accepted into a programme only after meeting the minimum requirements. According to Microsoft® Encarta® 2009 1993-2008 Microsoft Corporation (Encarta dictionary),
it is the process of obtaining the “right, ability, or permission to enter a place or an organisation or institution.” In terms of student admission, the ‘right’ is the fulfilment of the minimal educational qualifications, among other prerequisites.
The Federal Government of Nigeria owns and operates federal unity colleges. Following the civil war in Nigeria in 1967, Gen. Yakubu Gowon developed the 3 Rs – Reconciliation, Restoration, and Renovation – to nurture unity in the belief that her oneness had been scarified on the altar of battle.
This resulted in the construction of federal unification colleges in the nation’s then-12 states. It was founded in Nigeria’s four cardinal points: “Federal Government College Sokoto (North), Federal Government College Warri (South), Federal Government College Odogbolu (West), and Federal Government College Enugu (East).”

Pupils who have finished elementary school are only admitted to any of Nigeria’s unity schools if they have passed the NECO’s (National Examination Council) National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE).
This examination is given nationwide and in some foreign countries on a set date, and the best students are chosen from each state of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), based on the cut off mark, which is not uniform this time due to intelligence differences among the nation’s states.

Life is becoming easier and more entertaining as a result of digitalization. Computers can be found in many aspects of human life. From sleeping to eating, working to exercising, technology has become a human companion, and education is no exception.
Education, as the best legacy bestowed upon individuals, stimulates our minds and transforms inquisitive minds into intellectuals. It allows us to learn more about our lives and the world around us. Every education icon wishes to make education more environmentally friendly by incorporating technology.
As a result, many started with online applications, computer-based tests (CBT), and publicising admitted students’ names on the internet, but few have embraced an online admission system that will automate the admission criteria and standard admission guidelines.
The current admission process for federal unity colleges remains manual, although the application process has been digitalized by NECO, the agency responsible for coordinating and administering the national common entrance examination.
After the card’s pin and serial number have been authenticated, applicants who purchase the form are given a card that allows them to fill out the online form at http://www.mynecoexams.com/ncee/.
Only final-year primary school students are entitled to obtain this card/form for admission to the federal unity colleges/schools’ Junior Secondary School 1. Other classes in the unity schools are completed via transfer.
A system is defined as a collection of hardware, software (principles, rules, and procedures), and people who collaborate to achieve a common purpose, which includes information technology.
In this context, an online student admission system is a model of a system that will automate the minimal required requirements for the body/authority involved to meet before admitting a prospective student.
This method, like a seat reservation system, would reduce the delay caused by humans due to the enormous number of applications received. It will also impose a restriction on the number of applications for each course.
Decisions are made often in this system to avoid disagreement. Before decisions are made, submitted papers are checked using an external link to the body’s result checker website, which queries their database to determine the validity or untruth of such submission.
That is, following the national common entrance examination, the scores of candidates who apply to a specific unity school will be validated from NECO’s exam website (http://www.mynecoexams.com/ncee/) to confirm the accuracy or otherwise of the score submitted by the applicant.
Decisions in this system, as in other systems, are primarily based on human principles and experiences, but are built as intelligence into the computer system.
Computers, due to their speed and efficiency, are an excellent companion for business decision making and planning. Management information systems and decision support systems are used to facilitate this.
Methods (rules), processes/procedures, and machine-readable metrics are used by the system. These are used to convert data/information fields that will be used to enforce the system’s rules.
This is why a system can employ user input to obtain a goal, such as in authentication, verification, and decision making.
1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Any manual system suffers from several deficiencies and setbacks. The manual admissions procedure has numerous flaws, ranging from tardiness to favouritism in accepting students.
Manual admittance systems will simply increase paper work in this digitalized environment when individuals and technocrats are clamouring for a paperless future.
Prospective students are alerted via paper by putting their names on the school notice board, which does not promote privacy because everyone sees the notice board, as opposed to when it is uploaded for you just via your application page/portal.
In a nutshell, the manual admission system has the following flaws:
Inadequate secrecy – There is no confidentiality since admissions panels may disclose crucial and private information.
Privacy – Admission application materials can be blown away by natural or human winds. As a result, despite appearances, the system is not private.
Human efficiency is incredibly slow in terms of speed. If they evaluated each application against the specifications, one could be obliged to conclude that the snail is faster.
Error – Most of the time, there are errors in mapping the application number against the application name, resulting in two separate people being assigned to the same slot, generating major problems. Other problems that can be observed include misspelt names and incorrect application numbers.
Class Size – Due to human inefficiencies, a class of fifty students may be overcrowded at the end of the admission procedure, making learning inconvenient for the pupils.
1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The goal of the online student admission system is to automate the admission procedure of federal unity colleges in Nigeria.
To create an online system for student admission (to federal unity colleges) that uses Structure Query Language on SQL Server Management Studio for its database and Active Server Pages.net (Hyper Text Markup Language and Visual Basic.net are included) on Visual Studio for its interface design.
This system will improve:
A collection of candidates from various locations.
Time savings in activity management
Admission is made without the use of paper.
Manpower shortages
Data management centralised
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Because education is so important to people, the admissions process should be fair, with only the most deserving students admitted rather than those who were given preferential treatment. This technique addresses the issue of admission corruption and allows square pegs to fit into square holes.
The centralised database prevents data loss and duplication, which are both examples of data abnormalities. This will also aid in the correct preservation of applicants’ data as opposed to the paper-based system, which decays and may even be burned after a period of time.
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
In the formal environment, studentship comprises the phases of learning from preschool to postgraduate level, as well as the stages of apprenticeship in the informal setting.
Because the scope of studentship is large, this study is confined to prospective students of Nigeria’s unification schools who have finished their elementary education and passed the NECC. In Nigeria, neither tertiary education nor primary education are part of this system.
