A STUDENT EXPLOITATION SURVEY BY TEACHERS IN EDO STATE
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
Teacher exploitation of students is not a new phenomenon in our society; in the past, some students were physically and emotionally abused. Students are forced to work in their teachers’ homes, and farms, carrying firewood and fetching water for their teachers, and so on.
Nowadays, it is a completely different story; the act of selling monographs and textbooks has cast a negative light on lecturers who use one method or another to manipulate and exploit students in order to make their own money without taking into account the current situation in Nigeria.
Again, students are exploited by paying one levy or another, such as a departmental levy, a test levy, and so on.
When education was what it was supposed to be, students were not taxed for anything.
Textbooks and handouts were previously provided free of charge; however, teachers have transformed our schools into bookshops, with purchasing and selling of books made available and mandatory in the name of money at the primary and secondary levels.
Indigent students who do not have enough money to purchase these books are being forced to fail the course because they cannot afford them.
Teachers also exploit students through sexual harassment and result sorting, in which the teachers are forced to pay either in cash or in kind.
Students are made or are no longer serious about their studies because they believe that if they can meet the demands of their teachers, they will pass.
Because this situation of exploitation has been a burden to students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions, parents and guardians who are responsible for the education of their children and relatives have little or no left over money because the money has been taken away by the teachers in one way or another.
Money that was previously spent on training three to four people at the university is now spent on one person.
SUMMARY OF THE PROBLEM
Teachers who made textbooks and handouts mandatory in primary school created some anxiety and stealing in their students, while teachers who made textbooks and handouts mandatory in secondary and higher or tertiary institutions created some anxiety and frustration in their students.
In the sense that students are required to carryover in courses where monographs and textbooks are required.
These teachers go out of their way to prevent students from having their continuous assessments, resulting in incomplete results.
These have created a do-or-die mentality among students who are looking for ways to pass their courses. This causes student starvation and increases prostitution and promiscuity, particularly in higher education institutions.
Because of the teachers’ immoral attitude, many students have become victims of contact sexually transmitted disease as well as victims of unwanted pregnancies in our society.
The purpose of this research is to discover the various ways in which students are exploited by their teachers.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The goal of this study is to discover the various ways in which students are exploited by their teachers, but in more specific terms, this study wants to discover.
1. Whether teachers make textbooks and handouts mandatory for students.
2. If teachers require students to carry over from one course to the next.
3. If the purchase of monographs and textbooks is used as a form of continuous assessment.
4. How does this affect students, particularly female students in higher education?
5. Whether or not this exploitation by teachers contributes to female prostitution in higher education institutions.
6. How does this affect families, and how much attention has the school administration paid to this issue?
THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE
The findings of these researchers may be useful as empirical data for decision making in matters involving student exploitation by their teachers.
The findings of this study should encourage students to put more effort into their studies and to avoid taking the easy way out in times of difficulty.
The school administration may find the research findings useful, as they will serve as a guide in creating a good standard and conducive environment for learning. It will also help and direct curriculum planning to plan well as well as have many learning facilities in such a way that student outreach will be more emphasized.
The findings will be used to evaluate the efforts of the school administration in creating a good learning environment.
The ministry of education may also be directed to areas to focus attentions on in order to minimize the rapid growth of students exploitation by their teachers in our various institutions of higher learning as a result of these findings.
The findings of this study will also serve as a guideline for our guidance and counseling in educating our female students about the effects of prostitution.
