Chapter One: Introduction

1.0 Background of the Study

Grading in education is the practice of using standardised measurements to assess various levels of achievement in a course. The semester/session grade-point average and cumulative grade-point average (CGPA) are used to numerically indicate a student’s level of performance.

All grades from current classes are averaged to calculate the grade point average (GPA) for the marking period. The GPA is calculated by taking the number of grade points a student received over a specific time period.

These averages are used to assess whether a student is eligible for specific academic initiatives and programmes. Every student’s life and success are apparent through his academic performance; therefore, every student must maintain and monitor his academic performance.

As a result, keeping academic records and yearly performance of a student every session is critical, as it might push a student to work more over his or her course of study.

The social and economic prosperity of the country is inextricably tied to student academic performance. Students’ performance (academic achievement) is critical in producing high-quality graduates who will become excellent leaders and manpower for the country, so contributing to the country’s economic and social growth (Ali et al, 2009).

Grading in Nigerian universities varies, yet there are many similarities. Grades are assigned in letters (for example, A, B, C, D, E, or F), as a range or percentage of a total number scored, as a number out of a possible total (for example, out of 20 or 100), or as adjectives (outstanding, terrific, adequate, requires improvement).

Each grade is allocated a point (0-5) known as the grade point, and each course is assigned a credit unit (CU) or credit load.A student’s GP is calculated by acquiring the Grade Point Equivalent (GPE) for each course, which is the product of his credit load and grade point attained.

Performance in any semester is given as Grade Point Average, which is the weighted average of grade points achieved in the semester’s courses.

The goal of determining a student’s cumulative GPA is to determine the class of degree to be given; grades from all courses, whether required or optional, passed or failed, must be included in the computation.

Even if a student repeats a course more than once before passing it or substitutes another course for a failed optional course, grades earned at each attempt must be included in the GPA calculation. (NUC, 2007)

Previous study has focused on student academic performance measurement, which is a problematic element of academic literature, and scientific student performance is influenced by social, psychological, economic, environmental, and personal factors.

These characteristics have a significant impact on student achievement; nevertheless, they differ from person to person and country to country. The students included in this study are primarily young people.

This age group is considered to be heavily influenced by social trends and other environmental influences. It is vital to note that the quickest way to influence a student’s academic performance is to incorporate academic-related devices into his hubbies.

Because the use of smart phones has become increasingly popular with the development of mobile applications, offering educational apps will go a long way towards changing the use of mobile apps from an amusement and relaxation tool to a learning and assistance tool.
