A SURVEY OF CAREER CHOICE DETERMINANTS AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOLS STUDENTS

LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 The Concept of Career

Choosing a career isn’t like selecting an orange from a basket. According to Weiler (1997), “Successful careers rarely happen by chance.” With few exceptions, people who truly get what they want in a career do so because they define their objective plans and schedules for achieving their objectives, and take personal responsibility for implementing and adhering to these plans.

These people routinely assess their progress, improve their plans when they do not obtain the anticipated results, and continue in the face of frequent setbacks until their goals are met.

Many scholars have presented their own interpretations of choice and career, and some have emphasised the importance and goals of selecting a better vocation.

The dictionary definition of a career is a way of making a living amid a variety of employment choices.

Many people struggle to make decisions because they lack direction and counselling, forcing them to make decisions on their own. Several studies have been conducted on the factors that influence students’ job choices.

The viewpoints voiced on this problem are as diverse as the factors discussed in the first chapter. However, there is little question that many variables contribute to the progression of a kid’s backwardness or retardation VIZ, including genetic factors (which are inherent in the child) and environmental ones (which stem from the child’s upbringing).

2.2 NEED FOR PARENTAL GUIDANCE

According to Michael (2001), the home provides numerous benefits to the child, including protection, direction, shelter, and encouragement. Again, the home makes every effort to educate the youngster about the outside world by interpreting what is happening to and around him.

He went on to remark that while the child is not yet conscious of the variables and realities of life, with the support of his parents, he will be quite aware of the tracks or steps to take if he is to be useful in life.

He still believes that the homes are distinguished by continual disagreements and divergent goals between the parents and the child, who rarely develop a sense of family unity, making his personal security much more fragile. This child is embarrassed of his heritage and stumbles.

“The inability of some parents and guidance to provide good background and show interest in the education of their children has a vital role to play in the performance of some learners”

Unless the learners are equipped with the essential materials, all efforts to improve will be ineffective. Without learning resources, the child would very likely lose his sense of direction.

Parents’ influence has been one of the most powerful and persistent factors in determining a child’s attitude towards different school topics and, as a result, his career decision.
