A SURVEY OF TEENAGE PROBLEMS IN NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS
Chapter one
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
The average teenage or youth in secondary schools in Nigeria is experiencing an alarming rate of problems, necessitating the urgent need for effective counselling to help guide and nurture these young minds in order to avoid being overwhelmed by these problems, which may lead to costly mistakes in the future.
It has been very clear that Guidance and Counselling, which aids in the identification of adolescent problems and the provision of necessary support, has been lacking in our educational system, particularly in secondary schools; until recently, this discipline had been grossly overlooked in the system.
Due to a lack of career guidance, many students lack the necessary skills to function effectively among their peers. Many students have been unable to assess their potential and seek to select a vocation that will provide them with employment satisfaction; this could be related to either not listening to a guidance counsellor or not obtaining any counselling at all.
It is consequently critical to expose pupils to diverse strategies or ways of tackling their difficulties, which cannot be overstated. It has been discovered that most schools do not have a functional guidance and counselling department to solve teenage problems;
instead, there is a miniature office occupied by teaching staff who provides skeletal guidance to students on a wall while still teaching his/her entire weekly period, resulting in insufficient time for guidance and counselling services.
In light of this, schools are encouraged to have a strong and effective guidance and counselling program led by a competent counsellor to fulfil the specific requirements of their pupils.
Statement of the General Problem
The teenager’s poor academic performance in secondary school examinations should not be blamed on either the teaching pattern or the child’s lack of receptiveness to teaching; it may have been caused by the enormous problems confronting the teenager
which in most cases may not be noticed by teachers, and thus these problems has adversely affected these youths in secondary schools and has forced them to join bad peers in order to confide in someone, which most of the time
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The primary goal of the study is to investigate teenage problems in secondary schools in Niger state in order to provide effective counselling to alleviate, if possible, these challenges faced by teenagers. Other specific goals of the project include:
To investigate the need for competent counselling in secondary schools.
To assess the impact of counselling services on adolescent difficulties in secondary schools.
To recommend strategies to improve counselling for teenagers in secondary schools.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
What are the issues facing teenagers in secondary schools in Niger state?
Why is competent counselling so important in secondary schools?
How do counselling services affect teenage difficulties in secondary schools?
What approaches may be taken to improve secondary school counselling for teenagers?
Research Hypothesis
H0: Counselling has no meaningful impact on teens’ difficulties in Niger State.
H1: Counselling has a substantial impact on teens’ difficulties in Niger State.
Significance of the Study
The study would be extremely valuable to the leadership of secondary schools in Nigeria because it would highlight the need for proper counselling services in our secondary schools in order to address the issues that teens encounter. The study would also aid students, researchers, and academics interested in conducting additional research on the subject.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The research is limited to a survey of adolescent difficulties in Niger state secondary schools and the need for counselling.
Limitations of the Study
Financial constraints- Insufficient funds tend to restrict the researcher’s efficiency in accessing relevant resources, literature, or information, as well as in data collecting (internet, questionnaire, and interview).
Time constraints: The researcher will conduct this investigation while also working on other academic projects. This will reduce the amount of time spent on research.
