A WEB BASED HALL ALLOCATION SYSTEM FOR EXAMINATION

Chapter One: Introduction

Background of the study.

The current era is referred to as the information age. An age in which the desire for information has skyrocketed. Today, the computer is the most useful tool for gathering or obtaining information.

The ceaseless global and societal change that we are experiencing as a result of the quick transition from the industrial to the information ages resulted in the introduction of computers into the information industry.

This introduction (the use of computers) has quickly influenced all aspects of life, including families, companies, and, of course, the educational system.

According to a US General (Powell, 1995), “lack of information breeds analysis paralyses”. This goes a long way towards demonstrating that without proper information on any subject, it would be difficult to handle.

The computer is utilised not only to retrieve or access information, but also to allocate and organise thoughts and information. This has resulted in the creation of various software and applications.

However, with economic progress and advancements in science and technology, combined with Nigeria’s rapid population growth, education has become the goal of every parent for her child, leaving behind the early anti-education mentality.

This resulted in a significant surge in student enrollment, and there has been a silent demand for an effective method to manage students and departments’ numerous files at various universities.

Currently, in the institution, due to the increasing number of students, hall allocation for both lectures and examinations has become a bone in the neck.

However, this generated a slew of issues with hall allocation, and there are no firm standards for which method should be utilised. This research project, “Design and Implementation of Examination Hall Allocation System,”

will focus solely on hall allocation for examination purposes. To make the best use of hall allocation for examination, timing and hall capacity must be combined.

Statement of the Problem

In recent years, the quest for exam halls has not been adequately planned. The issues with the existing hall allocation for examination system are:

The increasing number of students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has caused significant challenges in the distribution of examination halls, particularly in departments with a big number of students.

Students and professors would have to transfer from one hall to another on exam day due to the numerous aspects that must be considered. Very little work has been done to analyse the extent of this process or create a web-based system.

Human error includes typographic and data redundancy.

During hall allocation, substantial labour is done in accessing files and searching for records prior to allocation.
