INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Through the usage of the internet, the modern world has expanded, making practically everything simpler; the learning and teaching environment, as well as the business environment, have improved throughout time. Internet has contributed significantly to our modern society. Consider the case study with regard to this research project. We will analyze the influence of E-readiness on higher education institutions using the Benin centre of the National Open University of Nigeria as a case study.

Internet usage has skyrocketed over the years, resulting in vast pedagogical changes that have led to a more dynamic learning environment. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) emerged as a result of the development of the internet and is today seen as a new communication technology used to improve and replace the previous methods of information exchange and delivery. They have grown in importance as tools for accelerating social, economic, and educational growth. Observed by Fuchs and Horak, e-readiness is not a phenomenon that solely relates the use of ICT and Internet connection, but also the use and benefits of ICT (2006).

United national education and cultural organization of Nigeria, UNESCO (2002), identifies ICTs as educational system and transformational pedals. However, the substantial role of ICT as development techniques is crucial to the operation of universities in both developed and developing economies. In a similar vein, initiatives to institutionalize ICT for development in the national Open University of Nigeria, Benin centre have focused primarily on public institutions due to the nature of ownership and policy, with less emphasis on private organizations. This could be argued on the basis that the necessary resources for institutionalizing ICT in our various institutions are accessible if and only if they can be effectively utilized. According to Colle (2004), e-readiness relates to relevant material, human resources, practical research, training capacity, and the ability to maintain these utilities during the evaluation of these indicators (resources).

It is especially evident in Colle’s (2004) definition, which states that e-readiness is a concept typically used to nations and refers to a country’s ICT resources for functioning in a modern information society. Moreover, he argued that e-readiness of a nation requires, among other things, a service provider, networking facilities, attractive ICT regulations, suitable human resources, and telecoms competition, etc. Universities throughout the world play a crucial part in every country’s development endeavor, since they have the theoretical capacity to be the driving force behind the Internet’s adoption in their own countries and beyond. Any actions being undertaken by the federal government as a whole to develop ICTs by assessing the capabilities of universities are of interest.

To support the above, it is essential to note that the evolution of the Internet cannot be compared to previous technologies. Molosi (2001) said that the television revolution required years to reach 30 million people, but the internet did so in about four years. There is little doubt that the rate of adoption of new technology in developing nations, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, is low. According to Naidro and Schutte, this is especially evident in the domain of telecommunication and computing infrastructure, such as telephones, power supply, the construction of a suitable electronic network, etc (1999). Internet connectivity has grown as a result of the expansion of the telecommunications infrastructure.

Despite the preceding, the majority of universities in emerging and under-developing nations demonstrated a poor level of e-readiness. This pertains to suitably trained personnel for effective and efficient internet deployment. In addition, there was a shortage of practical resources, to name a few, particularly in private universities, which is the primary focus of this investigation. Consequently, the purpose of this work is to examine the effect of e-readiness on the educational growth of our case study.

This study seeks to determine the extent to which e-readiness in the chosen private institution has contributed to educational growth in Nigeria.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Despite the increasing popularity and demand for ICT in education, there is relatively little systematic research and concrete data regarding how ICT is utilized in universities and even less about its impact on educational outcomes, social behavior, employment (human resources), and student productivity.

1.3 RESEARCH QUESTION

Does information and technology have a substantial impact on Nigeria’s social, economic, and educational development?

Exists a correlation between the use of ICT and internet access alone?

Does ICT have a substantial impact on the preparation of students at the Benin centre of the National Open University of Nigeria?

Does E-readiness contribute to enhancing Benin’s ICT resources for running a modern information society?

1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

There is no substantial association between the usage of ICT and internet access alone.

There is a considerable correlation between the use of ICT and internet connection alone.

Information and technology has a tremendous impact on Nigeria’s social, economic, and educational development, but there is no substantial difference between the responses of men and women.

Good ICT has no substantial impact on students’ academic success.

1.4 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

Determine the impact of E-readiness on educational progress in Nigeria.

Assess the adequacy of infrastructure at the Benin centre of the National Open University of Nigeria.

Determine the impact of E-readiness on students’ readiness at the National Open University of Nigeria, Benin Centre.

Determine the roles that E-readiness plays in Nigeria’s social, economic, and educational growth.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The research will demonstrate the role of E-readiness in the socioeconomic growth of education in Nigeria. We will be able to explain the impact of E-readiness on the readiness of students at the Benin center of the National Open University of Nigeria. This study then elaborated on the impact of E-readiness on Nigeria’s educational growth. Finally, opinions on E-readiness and its impact will be examined in depth, and appropriate recommendations will be made about the e-readiness examination of a higher education institution.

1.6 SCOPE OF STUDY

The research is limited to the effects of E-readiness on the educational growth of the Benin centre of the National Open University of Nigeria.

It addresses several aspects of ICT development in Nigeria. It provides opinions regarding the effect of E-readiness on the academic achievement of students in Nigerian higher education institutions.

The questionnaires will be used to collect accurate data on the effects of E-readiness on the academic achievement of students in Benin’s central higher education institutions.

1.7 LIMITATION OF STUDY

FINANCIAL LIMITATIONS:

Due to a lack of money, the research was unable to visit all parts of Benin City, but it was able to collect relevant information about the topic.

TIME CONSTRAINTS:

Due to the researcher’s extensive involvement in other areas of research, he/she was able to collect more information about the research issue; yet, he/she was able to encounter excellent ideas regarding the research topic.

1.8 DEFINITION OF STUDY

ICT: information and communication technology; is an extended term for information technology (IT) that emphasizes unified communications and the integration of telecommunications (telephone lines and wireless signals), computers, and enterprise software, middleware, storage, and audio-visual systems that allow users to access, store, transmit, and manipulate information.

E-READYNESS is also known as electronic readiness, which refers to the readiness to utilize information and communication technologies.
